I just recently installed a new gas tank sender while the bed was off but I filled up tonight and it only took 8.1 gallons and the gauge was reading under a 1/4. That's not right is it?? I have a 79 reg. cab short bed and the tank is at the very back.

Where did you get the new sending unit from?
There are several different types for the aft axle tanks, it depends on the year, whether the tank is steel or plastic (please don't say you got it from lmc!).
If you can only get 8 gallons or so in the tank, it sounds like to me that the vent hose is pinched. The vent hose was taped to the fill hose originally in three places.
I'm having this same kind of problem. for example last week I filled up. I let the pump shut off. it said 8 gallons. when I got going down the road it never went above 1/2 tank on the gauge. now I'm driving around and the needle is sitting below "E".
I have been noticing the guage is messing up.
no, I didn't replace anything. this is the way I bought the truck.

This prevented the vent hose from collapsing.
That's funny no I didn't get it from LMC, I don't get anything else from there but I did get it from Advanved Auto Parts. I already checked the vent hose and it looks ok. After the 8 gal. fillup the gas gauge read full though oh and the tank is steel and new. The previous owner installed it and I don't know where he bought it from. He just said it was from his local parts store
