Question 2000 7.3 Hard Staring And Skipping

Hey, My 2000 7.3 started skipping at an idle the other day, i drove it home figureing it needed a fuel filter, today i installed a new motorcraft fuel filter and the truck is really hard starting when it fires, it skips badly and only runs for about a minute, when you go to try and start it again you must crank it for 40 seconds to get to to fire. Any Idea's? I was told to check the fuel pressure and it maybe the electric fuel pump on the frame. Im not gettin and codes from the PCM.

Any check engine lights? Open your fuel drain valve and turn you key on and see how the flow is out of the drain. It should be strong. If not, could have a bad pump, clogged pick up screen or a number of other things. You could also lots of air in your system. Have you ran it low or out?

Hey When i got it home 2 days ago it had just about a quarter of a tank. i replaced the filter and put 10 more gallons in it to make sure there was plenty in it. I played with it and got it running about 10 times today for about a total of 10 mins, when it starts dying out it doesn't sound like it's running out of fuel (it's still smoking) as soon as u crank it it smokes but no fire. theres no codes and check engine light.

Sounds like fuel problems. Make sure your getting fuel first. If not a steady stream then you will need to work back towards the tank.

Barry's got you on the right path. You might have a failing fuel pump.

Might try to find you a piece of hose to attach to the end, or at least a catch basin. If it is working, you will have a hell of a mess.

When it starts skipping, does it smoke? If so, what color is the smoke?

No codes and check engine light, or no codes and no check engine light? How cold has it been when this has been happening?

I've got about 45k miles on my fuel pump from NAPA.

It's a blue.black smoke, smells like fuel, no check engine light, no codes, the day it started skipping it was 45/50 than it sat in my yard for a day which was cold 30 in the morning now it's back up to 45/50 everyday.

Have you checked fuel pressure yet? How does your air filter look? How old is your engine oil, and is it low? If all those check out, it may be time to try unplugging things like the ICP or MAP sensor to see if that makes a difference in starting.
