Engine Oil 3 Quarts Over Full. HELP

I just recently switched from Rotella oil to Motorcraft oil and didn't notice till 500 miles later that they come in 5 qts and not 4. As a result I had been running 3 qts over the max. I am worried that I may have caused engine damage. Could someone please give me their opinion.

do you notice any engine vibration? if not drive it. if you are not comfortable driving it the way it is, drain some out.

I wouldn't worry about it, heck, there are a lot of 6.4s running over full when they push diesel into the oil system so i'd think that 3 extra isn't a huge issue. Just drain it out a bit and go from there.

Yeah I drained it out as soon as i noticed but was worried about the effect it may have had. Truck drives fine and haven't noticed any leaks or other problems.

your probably fine if you did not notice any major vibrations. Did you check your dipstick after draining some off?

Actually the whole reason I overfilled it in the first place is that my dipstick readings are never really clear. Usually I put in exactly the 15 quarts and my dipstick shows overfull. That is why this past oil change I thought nothing of it.

I agree but usually it is before you run it and refill the filter and injectors. Thanks, I was just making sure.

Install a Fumoto drain valve next oil change. Makes oil changes and problems like this much easier to deal with!
