im looking at camshafts at summit racing, since its down the street from my house and i want to get some information on wich camshaft will work best on a 300.
since this IS the 300 forums i hope some experts will take a look at these cams and tell me wich one would be a good candidate for the beathing capabilities of the engine
i know the stock cam is a actually alright for the 300 STOCK, but im getting the 4bbl, efi manifolds, or headers.
Maybe some other mods in the future like a port/polish or maybe bigger valves.
Just get headers...if you get the efi manifolds, your almost half way to headers...and the long tube headers are better, period.
It depends on what you want.
If you want something for pulling power low end grunt
crane 248---> CRN-500511
If you want something with a little more top end and a nice racy/choppy idle and still be street friendly, 268's are usually considered a good all around street performance camshaft
comp 268---> CCA-66-248-4
If you want a smooth idle and a little more top end
crane 260---> CRN-503905
If you want an expert opinion, then call a major camshaft company and fill out the form for a custom camshaft. If you just call the tech lines, they gonna do what you or I or anyone else can do, look at the usable rpm range for each camshaft and ask you where you wanna make power.
Comp 260 or any make in the 260 Adv. range is a good choice. The tight 110 LCA on the Comp doesn't bother it. Most cams in that range have a 112 LCA. Mine idles smooth down to 500 rpm with no problems plugging around at low speeds.
The comp 260 is probably fine but its also an older design, the difference would be likely negligible but Id imagine it would lean towards the crane and ultimately respond better with future upgrades to the head.
I've gotten 19.5 mpg with mine on one test tank that included about 80 city miles + about another 200 miles of straight fwy driving. My son-in-law loaded my truck with enough manure for the garden that about lifted the front wheels off the ground...he told me other than that, he didn't even know there was a load on it as far as the engine was concerned.
