Doing the Foil Delete... Just cracked my first beer open!
Finally got the pipe all cleaned up and figured i'd take a break. Wire brush definitely did the trick with plenty of elbow grease and this stuff called "goof off" i got from OSH. Now i'm ready to put everything back together and listen to the whistle
12 pack by the time was pulling off the isolation. My wife ( I was buzzing and couldn't see straight) had to super glue and bandage up my finger from ripping it open on that tin foil they put on there.
Haha, well i wanted to be able to take it for a drive after i finished! hence only drinking one beer :P
And wow it really does make a difference. the whistle is really more audible at higher RPMs. I took a celebratory drive through my local mall parking garage to make some noise and set off some car alarms
What is the foil for? I just saw the removal for the first time. I'm trying to get through as many threads as possible. A lot of good information here.
My actual name is Bob Bates. I'm From Campbell River BC. My truck is a 99 F350 crew cab long box with 100,000 miles on it.

Welcome to FTE Bob. The foil is covering insulation that is installed for sound suppression. Removing the foil allows you to hear the turbo whistle more distinctly while the truck is under load (higher boost pressure). It also looks a little better if you're the kind who wants a pretty engine. Many people paint there's to really make it stand out.
Removing the foil won't hurt anything. The early trucks did not have foil on them. It was added by Ford after complaints by customers who didn't want to hear their turbo. You won't notice much of a increase in the sound unless you really lean into the go pedal, or are hauling a trailer etc.
Hi Bob and welcome. You will spend a lot of time on here if you don't have a great amount of self control. I seem to keep FTE open on my computer 24/7. At least that's what my time of post shows. It's gives me something for when the insomnia strikes.+
