Angry replacement of starter

ok I have a 81 f-150 with a straight 6. I replaced the fly wheel and but it back together and also had to replace the starter. It starts fine runs good but now I have a problem with the starter sounding like it does not ingage in sounds like it is always rinning with the fly wheele. I shimmed the starter and still does it. I am wondering what else it could be or is the starter could be messed up from the parts store I also replaced the silinoid too. please help me out.

I'm having the same issue with my 87 inline 6. Starter was always running while the motor would run, but now the starter wont even engage, if i come across any solutions I'll let you know man.

if you bought a "remanufactured" starter, that is probably your problem. In a reman starter, they simply just replace what broke in the first place, and leave the rest. They are junk, I have never had any luck with the $29 dollar autozone starter. Although i do continue to purchase them, and soon realize i have made the same mistake over and over, and end up going back and buying a 100% new starter and doing the job twice. I guess i always htink im gonna have better luck lol So, if it is a reman starter that should be your problem. If it is not, then I am not sure. I have never had to shim a ford starter. Did you try it without the shim? I have seen chevys where the mount for the starter was cracked, and the start would wobble and and make all kinds of noise. But, i would say buy a NEW one if you havent already, and check to make sure it is tight. It is pretty hard to screw up the install of a ford starter, so i would say its a bad starter.

There are distinctions between new, rebuilt, and reman'ed. I don't think anybody makes NEW starters for our old trucks.

Make sure you get the correct starter for automatic or manual trans. They will bolt up but one is longer than the other in the snout of the starter. That will rub the flywheel or flex plate. Or not engage at all.

Have you check the ignition switch? If the switch is binding, it will stay in the start mode too long.
