Heater Problem
Hello All; I'm a first-timer, and it looks like a lot of good info on this site.
I have a '97 Ranger 6 cyl, w/o A/C and 215,000 miles; last winter I noticed that I wasn't getting the heat I normally did in the cab when the heater was turned on, so I changed the thermostat; the heat in the cab improved but still not as hot as in previous winters; this year when I turned on the heater for the first time, I got no heat in the cab at all; both upper and lower heater hoses in the engine compartment are warm; I've taken the glove compartment out, and the fan and damper are operating normally; after checking some other posts, I checked for a heater control valve, but I have no such thing on my heater hoses; can the doors inside the plenum box be a possibility or is this equipment only used on models with A/C ?

If both heater hoses are warm, that tells me the heater core is not cloggged and is functioning correctly. We'll assume the t-stat is still good. That pretty much leaves only one possible culprit - the blend door. Even though your '97 doesn't have A/C, it still has a temperature blend door, and that could be your problem. From the Ford Manual:

Temperature Control
The temperature blend door, located in the heater air plenum chamber, directs outside air to flow through the heater core for heating, or to bypass the heater core for ventilation. It is controlled by the temperature control **** of the heater control.
A heater temperature cable connects the temperature control **** to a cam which operates the temperature blend door. When the temperature control **** is at the COOL position, the temperature blend door directs outside air to bypass the heater core. When the temperature control **** is at WARM, the temperature blend door directs outside air through the heater core where the air is heated.
Positioning the temperature control **** in any position between COOL and WARM causes the temperature blend door to direct more or less outside air through or around the heater core for whatever proportion of heated or unheated outside air is desired.

Are you certain you don't have a heater water valve?
The text & illustration sections of the parts catalog shows one for a Ranger 3.0, w/o A/C mounted on the passenger side of the engine.
The valve resembles the letter Z with a port top & bottom, two more in the center. It looks more like a manifold than it does a valve.

XL, XLT, Edge, whatever has nothing to do with it.
If it did, the 1990 FORD Light Truck Parts Catalog would say so.
It's for a 1996 and newer Ranger 3.0 without A/C.
