Well. I put a reman dist in and its exactly the same. The cap and rotor on the old one werent in very good shape, I think thats why the top end wasnt very good. Seems to run smoother and it doesnt ping so I think I will leave it alone.
Glad Im not the only one who has had this problem. I just cant believe the thing isnt pinging. I also got a refresh on why I dont like instaling a ford dist. The oil pump drive shaft likes to lay over to the side. I had one on my 390 drop into the pan one time.

With a long,thin screwdriver, put a ball of grease between the shaft and the tunnel...the grease holds the intermediate shaft in the middle and the dizzy slides in smooth.

If the pump drive shaft is installed correctly with the keeper clip installed on the oil pump drive shaft, then what happened to you can't and won't happen.
