Carl, first off, welcome to the forum. Glad to have you. Please post your location as most states have different requirements for titles. A bonded title may be the best way to go if your state has that option. The folks here are very helpful and will give you any assistance they can. You have found the best site for Ford truck info. on the web. Post some pictures as soon as you can. We like pictures. Looking forward to following your build.

Mich title
If, in fact, the PO did have the truck titled in his name (a lot of the time they say they lost the title when they just never bothered to do the paper work) there are forms you can get from the state to have the PO sign so you can get a duplicate title. If the PO will go with you to the county office or branch they wouldn't need to use these forms.
Not sure how Mich works, in some states you have to get the duplicate in the POs name, then he signs it over to you to get a title in your name.
Call 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424) and they can tell you how to get started and what you will need to do.
If I were you I'd feel better if I knew what the VIN was before I called them, maybe others on this site can tell you where any hidden VINs might be, if they even did such a thing in 1948.
Good luck.
