I have to go out of state in two days and just found a coolant leak. I can fix it I'm sure but am learning about diesels as I go. The leak is under the front of the engine where the oil pan and engine meet up (the very front) There is a belt that runs just in front. The main drive I think. ( I am not good with the names of everything, as you can tell ) Has anyone else seen this problem. I am not sure what it is. It is only a drip every couple of seconds right now. Thanks......
look behind the fan pully from under the truck.,,.you will see a weap hole on the water pump at 6 o clock..right above the crank pully...see if coolent is dripping from there...
Welcome to the site and you are at the right place to learn the engines. It sounds like Rick is leading you in the correct direction. Make sure it's not coming from up top and running down.

Thanks, I do like the site a lot. I do not have a truck, it is an E-350 van, so everything is really hard to see. I looked but could not find a seep hole. When I noticed the leak I was away from home. (10 miles away) Now that I am home I don't see it leaking. I did see some moisture going around the crank pully, but hard to tell. If it was coming out of that hole. Is that bad, or is it some type of overflow?
If you are looking up from underneath, the the leak is coming from the center, like said here before, it is the water pump. But if it appears a little more toward the drivers side, by the hose, and there are two bolts right there, it should be a bad o ring. Use permatex and another o ring.
Sorry Ron,
I had just finished reading about Rick's problems with his store and guess I still had him on my mind. Anywhy, Ron has the right idea as to where to start.
I don't know if the van water pump is the same as the F series.
On the trucks the lower flange is two piece with an o-ring gasket between the pump and the lower hose flange.
A lot of leaks come from that flange when the engine is cold, then it seals up as the engine warms.
I've learned through hard experience that permatex and o-rings do not make good company.
Use instead on the cleaned and prepped surfaces a very thin coating of silicone grease. (NAPA part # 765-1351) Apply only enough to make the surface look wet with no blobs or buildup.
I've used that method for 20 years now and nothing ever leaks for years afterward. YEARS.

i thought we could use both types?? i dont have a 2 piece water pump..its all one unit...
Thanks for all the help. I let the van sit for about 3 hours and did not see it leak again. I guess I can plan on changing the water pump and some o-rings in a bit.
