Can anybody tell me more about these oem heads: J416 (passenger) and J412 (driver). I'm assuming the third digit is a one but it could be an "I".
Anyone know what the big allen head plugs are for under the calve covers?
I believe these are date codes, but I don't know what it translates to off the top of my head. The casting numbers are on the head gasket side near one of the center intake ports, these will identify the heads. The large allen head plugs are in openings in the water jacket that are used to remove the sand trapped in the head after it is cast.

I thought I'd take those off to clean inside a set of heads..... I don't know what they do when they put them on but I was afraid I'd break something before they turned loose.... finally gave up.
Second time i've broken the intake bolt right by the thermostat, but this time on a 351 instead of a 302.
I broke 2 timing cover bolts on the 302 I just refreshed, as luck would have it the remaining parts of the bolts came out fine after the cover was out of the way. It's amazing how much corrosion happens around those water passages.
