4 wheel drive not working on '02 Escape

My sister's 2002 Escape has no working 4 wheel drive. It makes no difference if the selector **** is in the "auto" or "on" position. With the 2nd snow season approaching since she had the vehicle, she would prefer to hopefully have it working ASAP.

What suggestions would anyone have as to what I should check? Is there anything I should look at on the transfer case? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!

You need a scanner to tell you if the **** told the computer to switch to 4x4.

In the meantime check for a blown fuse.

A blown fuse is the 1st thing I checked. The fuse is good. Also when the selector **** is in the "on" position the 4X4 light on the dash does come on.

...how would you know it is without driving up a icy hill? Just bought one and was wondering the same. How you would tell if it is engaging or not. Since this is front wheel drive, will you notice any difference in the feel when its engaged? Also, which fuse to look for for a '02

I used the vehicle to pull out a bush on the side of my house late last spring. I had put the selector **** in 4X4 and the front wheels kept spinning. The rear wheels didn't do a darn thing. I had also just recently found out that it might be the actuator and that it is not an uncommon problem with the Escapes and certain model year Explorers.
