The factory says its a no-no to use a bumper jack on the 87 Bronco. I sure would like to be able to jack it up without crawling underneath. The attachments does look kinda flimsy. Any thoughts?
The bumper is 1/8 stamped (?) steel and I bet a hi-lift jack would either slip off or put a huge dent/crease in it. Most Broncos are pushing 5,000 pounds. The bumper is pretty much for show just like the bumper on newer Explorers and Rangers. It is not a lifting point.
Get a real axle jack with a long handle or real bumpers. The bumper on my BII is 6 x 3 x 1/4 square steel and boxed. There are bolts sticking through on the bottom that help prevent the hi-lift jack from sliding off. Just an idea.
I don't know what is on your 91. I do know what was on my 85 and 86 Broncos and the chrome bumpers are not suitable lifting points for a bumper jack. It is a fairly weak bumper that is not up for bumping that bends easy and on the outer end the jack can slide right off.
I am not so sure that weakness is just the bumper. There is a bracket between the frame and bumper that doesn't look too stout either. If no one can come up with a better idea.....I am considering having a local metal shop make me up some replacement brackets possibly with an integral lift point.
Easy fix, mount a piece of C channel 1/4 inch to your frame that will fit under the stock bumper. Bolt very thing together onto the frame. On the bottom lip near the corners install 1/2 x 3" bolts that extend down to the ground to prevent a bumper jack from sliding off. Cost total is about $50.00.
