Best chip choice for heavy towing with F350
I would like to hear opinions and/or experience from other owners of 1999 Ford F350 7.3L diesels about their choice for the best programmable chip to install for pulling a 13,500 GVWR 35' Fifth Wheel. I am at the point of purchasing a chip and don't want to leap before looking as this truck is my first experience in diesel ownership. I will be pulling on varied terrain, i.e., flat lands, mountains, off road.

Best programmable chip for towing in F350
Thanks to all the forum members who have responded to my inquiry about chips. I believe you have put me on to something. I'm going to pursue the DP Tuner chip. It appears this is what I've been looking. Thanks for your generous welcome and I look forward to future communications with all of you as my wife and I travel the good ole USA.

The longer your here the more you will learn. There are a few supporting mods that should be done before you get a chip. Most people get gauges (pyrometer, trans temp(if it's an auto), and boost. 6637 intake https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...s-h-u-g-e.html, and exhaust helps keep those EGT's in check.

I am on a tight budget, Got three project vehicles including the PSD. I shop the local classifieds for deals. Just picked up a Edge Evolution for the price of a Harbor Frieght OBDII code reader and WOW what a difference for very little cash. May not be the best but it was the best bang for the buck!

Speaking from the "dark side", I've tuned with Tony Wildman, and he does a great job!!
I just live tuned with him, and made a huge difference in towing capabilities. I can run with it pulling hard and can't get the EGT's over 1200*, and that was a 19,000 lb load.
I don't know if you have them yet or not, but get gauges so you don't blow up the old girl.
If you do a lot of towing, well, even if you don't, a bigger tranny cooler and transmission pan make a huge difference and will help protect the transmission, along with a shift kit or new valve body to tighten things up.
Also, seriously look into air bags for your rear axle, helps keep the truck sitting level, makes for a smoother ride, and you won't have people flashing their lights at you at night cuz your's are pointed to the sky.

Tony Wildman (www.totaldieselperformance.com) has my vote also. We towed our 32' 5th wheeler cross country this summer with Tony's tow programs. We travelled from Lawton, OK to Gatlinburg TN, back to Oklahoma and up to West Whitlock , South Dakota, then back to Oklahoma - approx. 4,500 miles. Like Farmboy said, EGT's never got hot and I had no problem staying in the passing lane through the Smokey Mountains. Tony's heavy tow tune automatically down shifts and keeps the torque converter locked to help slow the rig down, instead of relying soley on your brakes. I thave towed a good 5-6K miles each year the past 3 years with some trips to the Rockies, the Black Hills and the Smokies. Tony's chip has worked great for me.

Of course the majority of folks on FTE run DP, but on other forums Tony has just as big a following.
Just as others have said - gauges are a must before a chip, along with upgrading the exhaust and air intake.
