Our '97 E350 6.8 V10 gets better MPG than your bronco, now why couldn't we have driven that on the trip instead? Woulda had legroom for one thing and more snack space for another.
I used to average 23-26 HWY in my '87 with a 5-speed on road trips, using cruise control set at 55, running 235/75R-15 tires. As it sits right now, with some EGR issues and 30x9.50 MTRs, I'm lucky to squeeze 18-20 MPG out of it.
I just returned from a 900 miles trip around the Mojave desert and averaged 20.5 mpg in my 88 BII 4x4 manual shift. This trip included something like 50 miles of dirt roads, maybe 5 of which I drove in compound low. On the highway I drove as fast as 80. I had to replace the thermostat but, other than that, the Bronco ran great.
I usually hovered around 20mpg mixed. Best I ever did was 24mpg on a trip from Pittsburgh to New Jersey. Included 80mph driving before I discovered hypermiling. Wish I could give it a shot now. For reference, I consistently get >40mpg in a Hyundai Elantra rated for 35mpg under the old standard, keeping 55-60mph.
