Note on using old Chevy Seats in old Ford trucks

Everybody probably already knows this by now, but I was reading the Tips FAQ about seats for old Ford trucks, specifically the use of old Chevy truck seats from the late 80's through the early 90's.

Good advice except for one thing. The 90 to 92 seats are formed seats meaning the foam used in the seat is formed on the seat frame. This was not one of GM's best ideas. You can use this seat just keep in mind it will likely cost TWICE as much to fix and reupholster than a conventional foam on top of the frame seat. The foam needs to be cut off the frame, new frame webbing needs to be made and and attached and if what is left of the cushion cannot be reused a new cushion will need to be cut...pricey.

The seat can be repaired to better than new look and comfort, it will just cost more to do.

Good tip. I have an '88 Silverado and it's the same. In their favor, where they wear out (from sliding into the driver's seat) the damage is much more limited than on the other styles.

I just got my 88 chXXy truck out of the paint shop and was going to get the seat redone till the interior guy told me that. I found the seat covers with the foam on the cloth but they were 350.00+ so after all of the new lights weather strip hinge pins tires bed mat and roll in liner (you get the picture) I told the painter the interior was going to wait.

54 F 100

My friend has an 04 F150 and his 40/20/40 seats with the belts built into the seats measures out perfect for my 54. I am going to be looking for something like that. I know the pre 53 cabs are more narrow but the 53/56 is just right.
I think I would even like a leather dark grey. I just think our trucks look better with a bench. Your truck your way.
