What is wrong with my truck???

My truck has been running great for the past couple of months, but this week it started acting up. For some reason, every now and then this week, when I go to crank it, it cranks right up but then tries to cut off. Sort of sounds like it is starving for fuel. Then the last couple of days, it would run, i would be about 1-2 miles down the road, then it would try to cut off, like it was running out of fuel. Sometimes i can just slam on the gas, and it stutters and falls on its face but it keeps running. It also makes more white smoke. There are no warning lights, and i drained the fuel filter and there is no water, so what could be the problem? It was even worse today, it actually seemed to back fire, and made a huge cloud of dark smoke, and then lost power and made lots of white smoke as it cut off and i drifted down the road. After trying to crank it for about 5 mins, it cranked up and ran fine the rest of the day. Could this just be some bad diesel? I have added some additive, and was thinking about throwing in some tranny fluid. The fuel pump is barely a year old, so i dont think it is just not working right, but maybe. I just dont want to keep driving on her, if something is really wrong. Any help would be awsome.

thanks
Travis

It is actually brand new. I had taken the old one off to see if there was any gunk in the housing and when i put it back on i ripped the o -ring some how, so i went and got a new filter. It was doing this with the old one and the new one.

Take a look at the injector wiring where it passes thru the valve covers and see if there are and burnt/melted connectors.

The wiring may look good.....disconnect the harness at the VC and check the pins......it could be under the VC that is bad too....take a sniff of the harness too...rotten egg smell = bad harness

I am about 200 miles out from an oil change. I checked the level and it was just at the add line......thats pretty crazy, i new it had a slow oil leak but that is pretty low for know longer then it has been since the last oil change. I wil go ahead and change the oil tomarrow. Is that low enough to cause those problems?? I was under the impression that it would cut off if the oil was too low, not stumble and fall on its face? Do you guys think that was the problem?

Its unlikely but I have heard of one or two trucks that had issues when the oil was that low. They will stumble if the oil level gets just low enough but too low ie sucks air every now and then
