Can anyone tell me how to find out the if the computer in my truck is original? Can I track the original computer through the VIN number? Any info would be greatly appreciated...

On the right side where your door attaches you will find a sticker with something like HTL1 etc. Then just to the left and forward -remove the plastic covering over the sheetmetal- underneath is your computer. It should have the same code as on the door sill. It may not be easy to read but the computer is labled. So long as it is labled it shouldn't matter if it has been replaced.

The sticker in the door is imp4 the one on the computer is imp5rem. I assume that the computer is remanufactured. Should I try to find a computer for my that matches my door sticker? I wonder if there is any difference between the two as far as settings? Help!!!

You should be able to take that info to a quality auto parts supplier and they should be able to cross-reference those numbers to see if they are compatible. I'd try that first.

There are many reasons for the computer not being the same. The original may have been replaced and the code
changed for a rough idle,lean condition,mileage,etc...
The problem may return if you change back to the original
code. If it runs fine I wouldn't change it. Just an opinon,,,98

Rad; The code you show as IMP4 was the original code for your vehicle. The dealer did an update as per his Technical Service Bulletin. This was done when you brought your vehicle in to any dealer for any reason. When the dealer enters the VIN, the TSB will come up and tell him to re-calibrate. IMP5 is an update for IMP4. I am not sure exactly what the difference is between the two. Both codes are for 1997 F-150,s. The IMP4 was an early 97 code and the IMP5 was a late 97 code. The update could be something as simple as a 50 rpm change in the shift pattern. It could be one or several changes from IMP4 to IMP5. Your vehicle should run fine and unless you are having some type of problems, I would not mess with changing the ecu. Some of the Powerstrokes are up to their 8th update.
Thanks
Danny
