Speed sensor....GRRRRR

Can somebody tell me a brand of speed sensor I can get for this thing that will actually give me a steady speedo needle? Is motorcraft the only way to go?

Mine wavers a bit with the factory sensor so I can't really use cruise on the highway. I picked up a Borg-Warner sensor at the parts store and it was even WORSE!

Maybe it's not the sensor, but the tone ring in the rear?

if it is a 94 model the PSOM in the cluster could be the issue , the motorcraft sensor is an excellent one and i doubt it is the problem
and as stated before possible tone ring damage or debris stuck to it

If I'm not mistaking the speed sensor is in the trans or transfer case (2wd vs 4wd). I went through this, its most likely the one of the plastic gears inside of the transfer case (I believe you have a 4wd. There is a 11 mm nut that you can take out and pull the gear out where the speed sensor attaches and also the spedo cable goes in. There should be a colored gear on the end, some times you will find it all chewed up, if it is not stick your finger down in side the hole of the t-case there is also a worm gear in side, it is also plastic, mine was bad, bad news too cause you gotta pull the t-case apart. The sensor in the rear end is for abs and the pcm, but should have nothing to do with the spedo.

Nope the speed sensor in these trucks is on the rear axle.

What exactly is the "PSOM" and is it replaceable?

My Thunderbird has an electronic speedo but it works perfectly, and it has 170K on it. I can't figure out why this one doesn't work right since the truck's only got 95K on it.

the PSOM is the programable speedometer/odometer module , the instrument cluster
there is one other thing you should check that i omitted
one of the wires at the axle speed sensor should be grounded so that the signal to the psom is only a half sine wave , if there is resistance in this circuit it can cause an erratic signal
you need to check it with an ohm meter

The speedometer needle may waver and/or a light surge may occur on some vehicles when speed control is used at highway speeds between 80-113 km/h (50-70 mph). This may be due to slight dents/chips in either the exciter ring or the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) and air gaps between the VSS and the exciter ring. ACTION:

personally not me , manuals are way to expensive to repair or just replace a clutch
BTW , there are speedometer shops that do repair PSOM,s
my nephew had one done a couple of weeks ago for about $350.00

Maybe but I have gone through a few manuals and have to hire the auto's out and I have not had near as much trouble with a manual. and clutches last me longer than most people get out of a vehicle, so they are cheaper for me to run and like them better. lol
