Will a 67 289 intake work on my 80 model 302
It is a 4 barrell intake I can get for 30 bucks
Also is it worth it or should I go aftermarket

It should bolt up, but the ports are probably way smaller. A used Edelbrock Performer or Weind Stealth are 3 times the intake for about twice the money if you shop hard enough.

Actually I think the intake bolt pattern is different on the early motors as well so it won't bolt up correctly.

I think you may be right, Paul - I think they were the same as the early 302's but that there is a difference in both manifolds compared to the later years.

4V stock intake manifold

I think that the intake manifold bolt pattern is the same for all small blocks (excluding the BOSS 302). The 289-4V intake manifold ports will be at least as large as the ports in the heads.

Do you think? I'd like to find out now. See, the info I have is that the 67' 289 heads had way smaller ports than the 80 302 heads. It doesn't make sense to me that the intake ports would be bigger than ports on the heads it was destined for.

Well you can always measure the ports yourself, once you have your old intake off.
I checked a 289-4V intake I have in the basement, the ports are about .92" x 1.82". This is a C6OE casting.

After looking into this a bit more I have seen reference to a different bolt pattern on the early 351 motors but not the 289/302 motors, so maybe there is no problem.

And the 1980 heads have 1.04" x 1.94" intake ports..........not an ideal situation for air flow.

Port sizes

"The 302 heads have 1.04" x 1.94" intake ports..."

Well that's about an eighth inch bigger height and width. Is this a book value or did you measure the heads?

Book value. I know its not much, but considering that it should be the other way around...... He could open the ports up though and make it right. It really comes down to this though, he'll be trading performance for a stock look,IMO. I thought it would be a good idea to bring this out before he purchased the intake, so he could check and make his own descision. I have some stock heads that the book says have the same size ports and I measured them and they are real close to those specs.
