I was wondering about fellow V10 owners and their towing thoughts about a new 5er for my family. I have a 2005 F350 v10 CC 4x4 Auto SRW Shortbed with 4.10s. The GVWR is 21,000 and the RAWR is 7000 as per the door jamb sticker. Ford towing guide says I can tow 13,900 and payload is 3570.
Ok now the question is can I safely tow a Jayco 313RK with a 10,120 dry weight and a pin weight of 2440? Other side question is manual says the same truck with 4.30 gears can tow 15,900, so if I keep this truck and do get the trailer would the gear swap be worth it?
Oh and what does a gear swap cost? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
Based on the info you provided I would say you're within specs. You'lll still be below the GVWR and under the tow rating. However, the towing guide is just that; a guide. You should weigh everything to really get the correct answer.
4.30 gears will set you back about $700-800 bucks, both install kits $400+, installation ??? bet on at least $1000 labor. Is it worth it for such a small increase? I don't think so. Smaller tires are a lot cheaper. Use them when you tow.
Monsta is right on... Weigh that puppy to get the real world wt. We have been camping with trailers for 15 years...started with a 20 ft TT and now have a 36 ft 5er...Wildcat...about 10k loaded... and our 05 V10 handles it has good if not better than our previous 99 7.3L.. Also before i would spend the money on gears pull it a few times to see how it does for you...One other thing I have added air bags on the rear which i have come to love over the years pulling the 5er...keeps things level and stable.

IMHO...do not worry about the "dry" weight. That is a very misleading number. Pay close attention to the GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight). That is the combined weight of "dry" and cargo...or MAX your 5er can weigh.
Does the GVW fall within your F350 rating? If YES, then no issue towing.
As already mentioned...you might be well served to install some (Firestone) air bags to help with rear sagging...and stability.
In regards to the gears...Not worth the cost ($2000-$2500) to move one gear size. Now...if you were talking going to 4.56's, then Yeah...the V10 will love those gears while towing. However...when not towing your mpg's will suffer.
Thanks for the replies. I have a TT now and yea I know that weights in the brochure are not even close, if not borderline criminal! haha. Airbags will also be in the works and I did had the firestones on my 1/2 ton and loved them!
I'm not selling these, I just happened to find them on Craig's List the other day and thought I would pass it on since you are in the market for air bags... LoadLifter 500 Air Bags
One good rule of thumb to follow, is the 80% rule. Don't purchase a TT or 5th wheel whose GVWR is greater than 80% of what the manufacturer of the tow vehichle says you can tow. This leaves plenty of load carrying capacity left over for gear and family.
If your max towing capacity is 12,500lbs then you wouldn't want a TT or 5th wheel weighing more than 10,000lbs. This leaves 2,500lbs for family and gear.
Still got to keep in mind the rear axle weight considerations as well though.
I am also in the process of purchasing a new camper. I have a client who is a manufacturer rep for a different line. I was discussing that issue of "forced options", items that appear to be standard, but when you look closely, are "options". He explained that this is done for weight numbers, or what is sometimes referred to as the dry weight or shipping weight. It is a marketing ploy. I found this interesting because the unit we have ordered has several "forced options" on the unit, and is just another reminder to weigh the unit to get the real numbers
Never really did check the GVW on the F250, the fifth wheel trailer has a GVW of around 9,500#. Have had it hooked to the F250 and the only thing the weight does is level out the truck. The v10 with 3.73 gears in it pulls it just fine. Picked up a SCP on e-bay and had to send it in for programing. Will retune truck when I get the tuner back. Will see if it makes an improvement.
