460 to 400 swap

Okay guys ive been looking at the books and there is a bellhousing for a 460 and a different one for a 400....I have the one for the 460 can I use it on the 400? I noticed too that the flywheel seems to mount further away from the motor on the 460 than the 400. Is this correct? What would i have to change to get the 400 to fit in the 460 spot (outside of the frame mounts which I have). Thanks

Ryan

bellhousings are the same. unsure if the flywheel/flexplates are transferable though. why are you downgrading to a 400?

Depending on how he built the 400, it might be an upgrade.

Pretty sure the 460 and 400 flywheels are different. Aside from the mounts, you don't need much else, assuming the 400 has all the accessories and brackets.

Kay thanks guys, I was told that if I went over to a zf-5 which I could get cheap...I would have had to get it machined to engage properly..Not sure what was involved and didnt really want to go through the headache. THe reason for the downgrade is shaving 100 lbs, air compressor on the 400, and the 460 has a siezed rod and piston, slammed up against the head and blew the head gasket and looks to have warped the passenger side head. THe 400 cost me $100, comes with headers, 4barrel, and air compressor. Could only find a 460 with fuel injection and that was 1000. This way is cheaper for me. Plus I plan on putting it on Propane and when I do I'll bump the compression up to around 10:1. This truck isnt going to be a speed demon, I need torque, for 4x4ing and towing. The 460 just wasnt a viable price right now. See how I like it and go from there. Might go back to it, might try a diesel swap, Hell I might swap in my 300 with the offy and 4barrel. Thanks for the info and sorry for the ramble. Oh and the flywheel is different but the clutch will swap over. At least I hope so cuz its already bolted up!

You may have to notch the bellhousing a tad to clear the flywheel. Atleast, that's how I remember it. As to the ZF5 speed, here's a thread I have saved for whenever I decide to do it.... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/4...rans-swap.html

mpg with propane sucks just an fyi and you will need a huge tank to get any sort of distance out of that setup. also power wont be like it would with gas.

Some of the 73 model 400's had the (small block bell housing pattern). My parents 73 country squire station wagon was one. Most were the 429/460 pattern. But beware. Just too let you know.
