I have a 2004 Explorer and for about 6 months I've had a cold start squeak from one of the belt driven accessories. I think it's from either the alternator or the PS pump.
So last week it starts steering hard when cold like the power steering is out. It only dose it briefly usually when cold / on start up. I'm hoping it's the PS pump and I can kill two birds with one stone.
Anyone have a similar experience or could suggest any troubleshooting advice?
It could also be the tensioner that is binding up until the engine gets warm. If so, replace the tensioner as it will only get worse and eventually spit the belt.
Problem found. I went to change the belt and inspect the accessory. When I was removing the belt from the crank pulley, it fell off of the crank hub and hit the ground. I guess ford uses some sort of "cushion" drive for the crank. Between the pulley and the pulley hub is about a 1/8" of rubber. Mine has split separating the pulley from the hub.
I guess the tension from the belt was the only thing keeping the pulley on.
I used some epoxy to reattach the pulley till I can get a replacement. Hopefully tomorrow.
