Worth 2x your PSD???? I think not!!

So I poke around CL for another TDI commuter car regularly, and I found this ad:

$40,000 TDI Vanagon

I emailed the guy to see if he 'fat-fingered' his price and meant $4,000...NOPE!!

His reply:

"ok 38k but it is getting a new tdi and water lines ane the transmiission s been redone and it doe have two tanks one could use grease the other diesel, its a rarity to have a westy syncro, but with a tdi? way improved bumpers? diesel heater and ac converter? four batteries?"

I did a bit of research on these and even with the TDI engine, they still typically have a sucky tranny that you can get up to about 100mph and get high-20's for MPG.

This is just my opinion, but I think anyone would be a bonafide IDIOT to even think of paying half his asking price. Maybe there's a Vdub expert out there that could enlighten me as to what makes this thing worth OVER TWICE what I paid for my beloved Nyx. I'll be glad to listen.

I've noticed there are lots of people out there trying to take advantage of the fuel scare and the masses of people looking for vehicles that run higher MPG's.

Agreed. I paid $5800 for a 12yr old Passat diesel, and others at the time we're selling for $7000+! Some people were asking close to $10,000 but i doubt they got it.

There's always a scammer out there looking to rip you off.

WOW! you can get a fat motorhome for $40k not just a small van that doesn't even have a toilet or shower. I just bought a brand new 09' 27ft toy hauler for under what this guy wants for a van.

I have seen 10 year old VW TDIs with 200k+ sell for 10k or more.

they are taking advantage since they are a hot ticket item now. i'd rather buy another stroker and make more bio. wish i could convince the wife to driver an excursion.

Ford should market their 36MPG 2.5 powerstroke ranger , which is only currently available in Australia.

It is hard to understand what Ford is thinking when they could have such a successful seller if they would only DO IT. Seems like they want to lose.

$40,000.00? That's pocket change.
This link will not last very long because the vehicle has been sold.
$96,000.00

It's got a 'fidge' installed, that's why it's so much.

At least half of my work is on 20 year old vanagons just like that one. I don't do full on resto's, but I do a LOT of repair work on running rigs. Not unusual for the owners to drop $2,000.00 -$3000.00 and more in one sitting.
The Vanagon Westfalia is a one-of-a-kind vehicle with no substitutes for that same sort of platform being sold anywhere in the US as of this writing.
The people who own them know that and will not let them go because they are so handy for weekend camping.
The Syncro will take you anywhere the PSD will go and will do better off road with the viscous coupling 4x4 than any of the Big Three trucks could ever dream of doing. I've heard stories of Vanagons going around stuck 4x4's in the snow without any issues at all.
I fully expect the market for the Vanagon Syncro to remain strong for another 10 years.

wow Dan. I had no idea those little campers went for so much money. I've gotten stuck behind those on a few of the passes here in CO, so usually by the time I get the chance to pass them, I'm not lookin back.

96k...wow.

That's CRAZY money!!!! Like another thread on here about the guy wanting to lower his F350 PSD dually, if it's what you want....

Even if i hit the friggin' Lotto, I wouldn't pay $96k for something like that.... but obviously, that's just me.

That's on the Denver (CO I'm assuming) CL but has an east Oregon phone number? Smells fishy to me.
