I recently purchased a 1978 ford bronco, it has the 79 front end on it though, i thought it may have been changed over previously but it says the truck was built in december, so i dont know.
It has a 351M with 7 inches of lift and 35"s. The other weekend me and my buddies went bogging and got stuck real bad, and winched out, shortly afterwards the power steering hose from the pump to the box exploded off and I lost power steering. I cannot turn fully left, and from what I can tell the power steering box is done. I was wondering what would be a good replacement alternative? would the power steering from a 1 ton fit with a bit of fab work? or is there another alternative, i dont want this to happen again, along with the fact i am planning on putting 1 ton running gear under it and 44"s.
I think most of the 78 Broncos had the "79 truck" grille in them from the factory.
**EDIT**
After a quick search, it seems that the 1978 model Bronco did have round lights as standard equip and also offered the square lights as an option.
Most 1978's I have seen had the square lights from the factory.
You were most likely were never able to turn fully to left with the 7 inches of lift.
Maybe you just now noticed this.
All the half ton and FSB 4x4 steering boxes on those years bolt (with 3 bolts)on the outside of the frame. The 3/4 ton boxes bolt to the inside(with 4 bolts) of the frame. It will take some extra work But if your hearts set on 44s I'd think you have to ditch the half ton box.
i cant turn left far enough to safely drive on the road, i found a wrecked superduty bush truck, its a 1 ton so i am going to try and pick up the running gear from that. would i be better to stay with coils on the front or convert to leaf sprung?
go to cage offroad and stay coil sprung up front. I would run a hydrolic ram steering up front and get a new box and pump. this will allow you to turn 44's easier
on our 79 bronco we kept the same box but changed the pump and bracket to run a saginaw pump which seems to hold up alot better with bigger tires and harder wheeling. we ruun anything between 39.5's and 42's and although sometimes don't beat it too hard for the most part it is severely abused in mud holes and out on trails. I will have to check with the boyfriend to see exactly what they came off of years and such but I believe it was from a Lincoln or something. and for a 460 motor I'm not sure if there is something similar for the 351m & 400 if that is what you are running.
I have my 78 which is my daily driver and I take out on the trails with a 400 and the stock box and pump and haven't had problems running 37in boggers, the only issue I had was when turning the one way the tires would clip the radius arm
