my vote is for the Volant CAI or the S&B CAI. they both draw air from the fender and behind the headlight.

5.4 FFV with 3.73 gears
3 people in cab, 500 lbs in bed.

drove from Seattle to Austin over 3 days. Averaged 19 mpg for the trip overall @ 70-75 mph.

quite a few tanks in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas got me 20-21 mpg. Truck averaged 18-18.5 mpg on the return trip. it was snowy and I had alot of storm conditions to fight.

also, that was in February when the winter blend fuels were still out. I'll bet my mileage would have been 1-2 mpg better with summer blends

Okay, so it's "Crazy 001" thanks for the clerification on that 20 mpg statement. I can buy that they have the potential in perfect circunstances to hit the magic 20 mark every once in a while. I am a believer in the S&B setup. The distributor I work for sells AirRaid and K&N but I like the S&B for the F-150 application. I really like the SCT 3015 tuner. We sell all of the major brands but SCT owns the Ford market. I wish the had a nice monitor like the Edge, but the tuning is so much better I can do without it.

Actuallly, my name's Tom.

But you're right about only on ideal circumstances...long highway trips are about the only time you'll ever see 20, but at the same time, the vast majority of people I talk with do nothing but complain about fuel economy, and at the same time drive it like they stole it.

Can't have it both ways! You can either have fun, or get good MPGs....NOT BOTH!

Tom is wise! But try to explain that to the guy who buys the CAI or tuner develops an overweight right foot then complains about his mileage....

Are you using the SCT tuner? Is that what you mean when you say "tuning is so much better"? Just wondering if SCT does something extra that the Edge doesn't.

The 'performance' setting on the Edge really woke up the engine.
No surprise the mileage suffers. It's worth it though.
I'm getting about 14 MPG mostly in-town.
I still have a good bit of tweaking here and there.

I'll check out prices on the AirRaid, K&N, Volant, and S&B. Any one have pics of theirs?

BTW - when do you (or do you ever) get attachment posting privileges?
I notice that some have pics embedded.
Are they all linked pics from another site?
I have an IWE solenoid picture I need to post on another thread.

Thanks everyone,
Paul

The SCT tuners that i have experience with are fully customizable. I know that with my SCT XCal2, i can throw my truck on the dyno and control every aspect of the tune.

Dang, Tylus, I am jealous! I have the same truck except for it is a Lariat. I had no passengers and about <200lbs of payload and stock intake. a new addition are the Wrangler Silent Armors (33"). I have a relatively light foot. Just completed a road trip from ~Charlotte, NC to Hilton Head, SC, about 95% interstate. Got 15.5mpg going and 14.7mpg on return, driving at about 70-73mph max. Granted I have not adjusted the speedometer for the slightly larger tires, but I was disappointed in the mileage. I do that good around town!

On the CAI I have a Rousch, same as Air Raid, but removed it for a particular service. never reinstalled, but never noticed any real improvements in performance or efficiency, just noise. Of course i still have stock exhaust too.

If anyone's interrested in S&B CAI installation instruction:

http://images.autoanything.com/image...ke_75-5016.pdf

Before I bought one, I really wanted to see what it looked like after install.
Best Price I've found for the 5.4L S&B is $269.95 shipping included.

look in my gallery. got a few pics there of the Volant

either upload the pictures to Photobucket or FTE.

1. Photobucket: after you upload the picture, you will have 4 or 5 little text boxes below it. click the one that says IMG tags. it will auto copy it for you. then just paste that into your text box for the thread

2. FTE or other site hosting the picture: in the advanced reply box, there is a little yellow button with the alt text "Insert Image"

click that, put your picture address in the popup window that appears.

you should see [img]...[/img] the ... being the address to the picture
see bold stuff

in the mountains the truck got 16-18 mpg. it just depends man. I had even more wieght in the bed on the return trip... what I remember of SC has alot of undulating (sp?) hills that killed my mileage when I lived in Goose Creek, SC. Especially near Columbia and going down south near Augusta.

You really should get your speedo fixed. 1" taller tires don't sound like much, but they can drastically change the speedo reading.

oh yeah, that trip was with the Volant and Exhaust. no AS 2.5" though

Tylus,

How do I go about changing the speedo? Asked the dealer once and they said they could not. Not sure why, technical or legal. Meant to follow up on that when at the shop, but forgot. I have heard you can with a programmer like Edge. Not sure though. Do you know?
