Tach works intermittently ....
Hello all ...
I recently acquired a 1988 Ranger XLT, super cab, 2.9 engine, 5-speed. All original & stock except tires and radio/cassette ... 90,000 miles.
The problem is with the tachometer (factory installed) ... works fine and for reasons unknown simply stops ... then starts again ... then stops, etc.
Works most of the time, just an occasional problem. Have checked connections on instrument panel, nothing burned, loose, etc. also checked engine wiring for shorts ...
I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback. This is my first Ford product (great little truck thus far) so I'm a little unfamiliar with Ford products, but I am mechanically inclined ... and can follow directions.
Thanks again ...

Now I don't know if they changed the tach *signal* from on top the Distributor yet ot not concerning that year.
Basically you need Power,Ground, and Breaker signal(RPM).
Just check the leads as least One of them is not always connected well.

Thanks for the reply ... checked and the 2.9 has a coil mounted on the fender well with a plug and various wires. The plug is tight, no loose wires, etc.
I'll try tracing down the wires (I found a diagram), maybe something along the line (TFI module?) who knows. Not causing anything that I can tell other than annoying me.
Thanks again for the help.
regards,
Patrick
