cruise control on 2001 F250

Hello everyone! I have a 2001 F250 with the 7.3 in it and I am having a problem with the cruise control, sometimes it will work and sometimes it don't. I have noticed that when it will work it sometimes(the cruise) will cut off while going down the road. I need to know if anyone has had this problem and what the fix was.I do know that there is a plug on the master cylinder that has something to do with the cruise and one on the brake. If anyone can tell me how to check and see if one of them is the problem I would greatly appreciate the help.

Unfortunately with the 7.3 you need a scanner capable of running a switch test to determine what the problem is. The gas motors can do a self diagnostic using flashing bulbs on the dash.

It could be the sensor you're talking about, or the switch on the brake, e-brake, clutch (if applicable), or the wiring to one of the buttons in the steering wheel. My intermittent cruise issue was the clutch switch.

You can try disconnecting and shorting the leads together on the sensors that should give closed and leaving the harness open on sensor that should give open. Do this one at a time until you find one that fixes the problem.

I had problems with mine (6 speed), and it turned out that the switch was getting water from somewhere. I still haven't fixed that problem, although maybe the new windshield may fix it. I replaced my clutch switch 3 times, and fixed it with new springs twice.

check where the clutch pushrod (if you have one) enters the clutch master cylinder, and see if it is wet. if so, this may be the problem.

And, welcome! by the way!

Welcome to FTE. If you look on your brake fluid reservoir you will see a sensor that releases the cruise control by pressing the brake pedel. If you have brake fluid on this connection you have a bad connection. Mine did the same thing and I changed the sensor and all is good now. Go to your local dealer and buy the sensor for 20,00 and see if that is the problem. It was with mine.
