Been emailing this guy about a 1996 F150 4x4 with a 5.0 and he wants $1500 for the truck. Here is his email to me about the problems on the truck.
first, thanks for your interest, and yes I still have it. It has just a shade under 160K on it. I lived in Ct up until 2 yrs ago explaining the rust. The truck was crashed at some point before I bought it so I can't vouch for the severity of the hit. It was repaired professionally but I would've been disappointed if I had paid the money. It looked very good when I bought it but it is clear that the F/L fender and bumper has been replaced, as well as the radiator and probably the rad support. the inner fender was repaired and there is a crack in the A/C-heater box behind the rt side exh manifold that has been glued back together . If you look at the slide show, you can see it in one of the eng comp shots. The 4X4 works well, as it should. I only used it in snow and never off road. It has a manual shift xfer case. The transmission problem is curious, but frustrating. First, I has always hunted for gears more than I thought it should. I believe its a swap in from Ammco or somewhere and has the wrong valve body or something. It shifts very well, and tight. Never had any doubts about the fundamental integrity of it. What it does is this. Every once in a while, it goes into what's explained to me as "default mode". In D/M, it winds out very hard and shifts extremely hard and won't go into O/D. Apparently, this is the case when the ECM detects a problem and sends it to a safe mode, so as to speak to deter andy damage. To me you could do some damage if you drove it like this for any distance but hey, that's just me. When it does this, it you shut the car off for a few seconds and restart it, 9 out of 10 times it will go away until it gets a hair up it's *** to do it again. Sometimes in a few minutes, other times in a few weeks. I believe it is either a faulty valve body or a bad connection somewhere around the ECM. That's all I can tell you about it. Hope it helps. If you want to talk further on it you can call me during the week on my cell at xxx-xxx-xxxx. I'm leaving shortly for work and am on the road all week until probably Fri morning. Again thanks for your interest
So what do you guys think? A decent deal? keep looking? How much is a rebuild or new tranny for these trucks? Thanks
Doesn't sound like you need a rebuild... I'm against buying trucks with problems, but it is a fairly decent price, mileage is a bit high though. Maybe for 1000...
You should probably look at the truck in person and test drive it to see if the trans acts up at all. I agree with gweeds, maybe $1000 would be a more reasonable price for this truck considering the high miles and also the fact that it has been in an accident and it has some rust issues.
Thanks for the reply. I am looking for a 4wd truck to hunt with and haul my atv with. Maybe even a little playing in the woods with it. And my...well me wifes limit is $3k to spend. Think I can find something that dosent have any major issues?
If you have 3k to spend, you should have no problem finding a good truck that will suit your needs. Just keep looking, I'm sure you'll be able to find something decent with no major mechanical problems.
*****, I'll sell you my '91 F150 for $2500, all mine needs is a tune-up and exhaust from the cat back, and with 102,875miles, the auto-lock hubs still work great... She's an XLT Lariat, ext cab, short box, "Northland Edition", dual tanks, 19gal/18.2 F/R, Tires less than a year old...........
If you aren't too god aweful far from Jackson, Mn, if you buy, I'll personally deliver..........
buy a $2000 truck and keep $1000 for the repairs/additions it will need to meet your approval.
buyers market out there now.
look until you find the truck you can't live without.
Agreed. For $2000 you can find a 4x4 with either a 351 or 460 in decent shape. And if you plan on doing towing/playing with it, you'll need that extra $1000 eventually...

In todays world, a 351 and a 460 are taboo, 300's and 302's are a bit more economical.......
My '91 5L F150 gets 16 city and 22-23 hwy..........
