7.3 to 6.0 Intercooler swap

Well I finally had time to swap out my 7.3 IC for the 6.0 cooler that has been sitting in the corner for 2 months.

At the same time I installed a Tru-Cool MAX 4739. I am kinda particular so I want to trans cooler right in the grill opening. So since my 7.3 cooler left no room for that I knew the 6.0 cooler needed to be mounted tighter than the 7.3 cooler. I modified the top mounting ears and was able to get the cooler a mere 1/4 inch away from the A/C condenser. This barely left enough room for that huge trans cooler but with a little sawzall work of the header panel I made it fit just fine.

All in all the cooler is about 3/4 inch back from where the 7.3 cooler was mounted. The Passenger side pipe still fit but not perfect like before so one of these days I will take that back out and cut out an inch or two of height. The 6.0 coolers passenger side outlet is higher than the 7.3 that is why the pipe doesn't fit just right.

I haven't had a lot of drive time. So far I just mounted the trans cooler with out the thermal bypass just to see how it does. So far I have not seen more than 50 degrees over outside temps. I will test it on the dunes before I make a final conclusion. EGT's will still get out of control which I expected. The Super Duty guys all say 100-200 degree reduction but only when towing with the 6.0 cooler. But bigger is always better so I had to put it in.

BTW the 6.0 cooler was only $100 shipped cause it had a broken mounting tab that was easily glue back on thanks to 3M panel bond!

Drove it today down the highway on the way to Work/Church and noticed no difference in empty EGT's. Didn't really expect much difference. I can still bury the needle at WOT at about 80-85 MPH from a stand still. I expect towing (which I do little of) to be a little better though

I have not noticed a difference running biodiesel as far EGT's

Intially adding the intercooler a year and half ago was to get exhuast gas temps down to keep my engine (or any other diesel running a chip or injectors) to keep the engine from melting down (gauges help with this as well). The 7.3 cooler from the 99-03 superduty was intailly put in and worked very well. But the 6.0 cooler from the 03-07 trucks is larger and in theory and practice with the Superduty crowd cools better. So I just swapped out a good cooler for a better cooler.

I never had any trans temps issues either even running the sand dunes but I like the though of having way more cooling than I need and the Tru-cool was the answer for that. I did notice on the highway today where I normally run 160 or so it was 130. So a 30 degree drop. This afternoon will show the difference better as its warmer out now.

The transcooler was $141 shipped. I bought it from these guys
eBay Motors: TRANSMISSION COOLER HD 40,000 GVW TOW TOWING TRU-COOL (item 7999761123 end time Aug-04-08 17:00:00 PDT)

I did have a problem withe threaded fittings not being right in the kit for the cooler though. I sent them a message about this weekend and I am waiting a response. Nothing some 3/8 brake line and fittings couldn't fix though.

I am pretty certain the 6.0 cooler is bigger but I don't know about cooling capacity. I would guess they are equal but that 6.0 trans cooler is huge.
