302 efi swap to 351w carb

Basically where do i start. This is with the 91 F150 in my sig block. gas is too much, so i'm making my truck into a recreational vehicle. I want to use the Edelbrock dual 4bbl carb intake. With that, how should i build up the 351w without it killing my tranny and axles.

Your opening a can of worms. Why do want want 2-4 barrels? A single 4 is all you need for a mild 351W. My friends small block makes 905 HP with one carb. You will need a fuel pressure regulator with a return line back to the tank if you carb your truck with fuel pumps in the tank. I havnt done it, so you might get by with just a regulator adjusted down to 8 psi.

You don't, if you significantly increase power output from the motor you need to increase power handling capacity of the tranny and axles. The stock driveline in that truck will handle some milder upgrades on the 302, but considering you probably have the Mazda tranny, a healthy 351 will drastically shorten it's life so upgrading to a ZF is recommended. The axles will need traction bars and possibly gears too.

i think i let my mouth speak before my brain thought. It is a mazda, i checked the vin. As for the cheapest route;i already have most of the parts i need for a MAF conversion.
new heads 170cc in/60cc ex/60cc combust

a cam around .480 lift/1.9 1.6 valves/212 duration,

and 4.10 gears with 33" BFGs should make me plenty happy wouldn't you think. And my wallet happy.

That sounds like a better alternative.

Ok, forget the dual 4bbl. As far as ease of swap, will a swap to another EFI or carb be easier.

EFI will be MUCH easier, but your tranny is still the weak point. You could swap out the rear axle for a 9" and just about double the strength.

Just for clarification, when running a ZF or manual trans you dont need the tone ring in the 8.8 ??? Or is it needed for the E4OD to shift ?? Not trying to jack thread.

Ok, EFI then. I got most of the parts for a MAF converstion i was gonna do to my 302, i can just use those parts on the 351 right?

So before many upgrades, just a stock 351w with aftermarket exhaust, cam, maf, and MSD. Is it really gonna pound on the mazda tranny and 8.8" rear end that bad. I have a 9" sitting in a 79' f150 back home, but i can't imagine shipping prices cross country.

Higher rear end gear ratio outta help the tranny out right, i want either 33" or 35" tires. say 4.56 gears?

The 8.8 is fine, and the tranny will be too as long as you aren't doing burnouts and other silly things.

yeah i agree, there is nothing wrong with an 8.8 until you start going up a lot in tire size.

Good, i kinda figured the rear end would be fine. And I'll be nice to the tranny till i go off-roading. But when off-roading the tires will be slipping so the force applied to the tranny shouldn't be too bad.

So i want to just buy a short-block, put the heads from my 302, i have a gt40 explorer upper intake that i'll need to match to a 5.8 lower. I'll get a nice cam(35-255-5), lifters, pushrods, timing set. What else will actually move over from the 302; Alternator, pwr steering, fan & fan cluth, etc... And what won't; distributor, a/c don't work so i'll just remove that, smog pump is gone too.
