Now I wonder how I should register it, and stay legal. I know if I tell them it’s a mix, it would have to be a 2008 title and pass smog and safety laws, if I go 51 and something happened (wreck or whatever) would my insurance pay if the frame says 78? Same with saying it’s a 78 and it looks like a 51? Anybody been through this or know anything about it? Thanks.

The vehicle is the one the frame goes with. That is where the ID number is located.

Do you know the law on the mix? Usually the smog law follows the newest component, not bringing it up to current standard.

Did you research that directly with the DMV? Vs. your buddy, what you've been told by the neighbor, what you think you heard?

If you have an F6 cab on a '78 frame and it is registered as a '78, then any cop who runs your plate is going to be pulling you over as if the plate is stolen.

In NH and GA it goes by the body's VIN (unless it is a custom hot rod). Check your state laws.

Say it is a 1951 and have it appraised (not by the insurance company) as a restored 1951. I would not even mention what the frame or drive train is and I would keep my mouth shut and if asked, I would just say I upgraded the 1951 to 4x4. You want it mentioned it is a 4x4. Just I would not say I swapped another vehicle's frame under there, that is a red flag issue.

I have a Bradley fiberglass body on a VW pan. It is registered as a VW.

It seems like you would need to register the vehicle as a 1951 F6. That way your vin # that appears on the body will match the one on your title and registration. I don't think the vin #'s that appear on the frame and other parts matter all that much. The vin # that counts and is inspected by law enforcement is the one on the body. Whatever you decide be sure to check with your state laws.

You need to get some legal advice on this one, the answer is simple to me, but I'm not to good to skirt the law hee hee. I don't want you in trouble. I would go by the old saying, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck. However, the law might not buy that your 51 is a duck, but to me, it's a duck.

I would also say it is a '51 as far as anyone else is concerned the frame is none of their business. In all the VIN checks I have had no one ever checks a frame. If it was that big of a deal any frame VIN would disappear if it was my project.

Couldn't even read the VIN stamped on my 77 frame. The only visible one is on the cab and door. Wouldn't the 51 be exempt for smog regulations? But, anyway, I'd go with the 51 as your registered vehicle. To be right with insurance, You'd have to get it appraised and that's what insurance companies are going to go by regardless of what the chassis is.

Years ago I put a 69 Chevelle body on a bronco chassis. I took the title to the Chevelle and Proof of ownership of the chassis, which was purchased at a salvage yard to the DMV. Both VIN numbers were put on the title and the title was branded MODIFIED.

My cousin is married to an FBI agent who used to work vehicle thefts (interstate, organized crime, etc) and he identified vehicles by the confidential serial numbers on the chassis. The obvious numbers that people know about is not how he identified vehicles.

He'd have a heck of a time trying to identify many. On my 77 truck, I know where they are, but with time, rust, and being sandblasted, I can't even make out the entire number.
