Well the main reason I chose this casting for the ability of an easy overdrive convesion for my 78 bronco.

Good choice! I would use it for that same reason. With a beefed up AOD, and the right build it could get decent fuel mileage.

cant you machine a block to accept the small bellhousing? there seams to be enough meat to do so...

I think that you need to add metal to the bell housing flange to mate to the small bell. There is no place to drill for the small bell pattern on the standard block. The FMX block has that extra metal. In fact the FMX block can be drilled to accept the large bell.
They do make adapters for a small bell.

whats the catsing code for that small bellhousing block? michigan, cleveland? also the year of it?

It is a d1ae casting I still have not opend the packing around the block due to the weather here so i dont know much about it. but i cant wait

I hope you weren't waiting 6 years just to put an AOD behind a 400. You could have done that a long time ago!
Conversion kit - 335 series to c4/AOD.

Yes it was that reason and that and any kit adds too much to the drive line. I dont want to add anymore more stress on the pinion. and the fact that I may be the only one rolling 400fmx in a bb bronco XD
