SCENARIO: The whole city of Norfolk is trying to get out of the city

Now then - the question is, what route do you take?

If you assume from the get-go that the 64 loop is a complete disaster - how would you get to 58, northbound 64 above Newport News, or out past Great Bridge towards South Carolina if you can figure there will be flooded out places, or traffic jams?

Have you ever thought about it, or done a dry run to look for ways to go?

I started thinking about it because I used to live on Whilloughby Spit. Hurricanes are always possible, but my main thought has nothing to do with a natural disaster.

I live in Denbigh (west end of Newport News). Half the battle is already fought unless I'm @ work (NAB Little Creek) when something happens.

Greywolf, you have way too much time on your hands...good point to think about though. I'm still trying to figure out "where does the fire go, when it goes out"?

Do like the Cubans do. . .and then just head up the James River to Richmond, pull out of a boat ramp and dump the barrels

Not to alarm anyone, but I have reason to believe rioting may be a major concern over the next four years.

Steve makes an interesting point. A boat may serve better than anything else if things go bad.

Nice "POCKET GUN".

Hopefully you'll never have to use it for its designed purpose.

I like a combination of long range and shotguns for the details. My dream rifle is an M14 with stars on the barrel.
But I still believe a man with a knife at close quarters is the most dangerous.

KEVLAR clothing IS available...

You can take secondary roads out to 58w, 460, 13n&s, 17n&s.
I should have a us road atlas under a seat along with some state or local maps.

The very best thing to do is have a MAP, and be able to use it.

I had some work a while back up a little west of Richmond so I went on the computer and put in the address and printed whatever came up and put it with some other paperwork. Man that was a hassle, 64 was ok but theese directions have you going north on 495 toward Wash DC and looping back and getting on this toll road and that etc. And then going back I missed the a turn and headed straight into Richmond through 20 or 30 blocks of some of the worst looking most vacant boarded up waste land I've seen lately, and this is like 1:00 in the morning. Finally ended up near some college and a 7-11 before I felt it was safe enough to even stop and look at a map. Last time I use that without really looking at what it says.

Strange but true - the fastest way to get to memphis from norfolk is to go north on 64, and then catch the big road south through the shenandoah.

The shortest way is 58...
