I wonder if I get a set of headers for my 2000 California v-10 now in Ga. that does not have the egr valve bung, if I can make a block off plate for the intake and run without it? I do not see a transmitter on the valve , so the computer may not know its gone? Anyone?
Curiouser and curiouser, I just posted that 00 and up didn't have EGR's, I guess I was wrong
But then, it's an Excursion...
If there is no DPFE, I guess you can just block it, but I'm sure that the PCM is assuming it's going to be there and adjust the mix/timing to counteract the effects of the EGR.
So you might have a light-throttle lean condition... or rich? Sheesh...

If it has an EGR valve-it must have a DPFE somewhere in the EGR's path, or the PCM cannot control how much EGR it's allowing to pass.

Correct, I did find a DPFE in the EVTM for 2001 Excursion for California.
Guess that answers that ...
I wish ALL V10's were equipped with an EGR system-there's substaintial amounts of fuel mileage to be gained by adding as much EGR flow as possible when cruising.

I thought the egr valves purpose was to inert the combution chamber with exhaust gas [ less oxygen ] , to cool it down somewhat to reduce oxides of nitrogen. how would that effect mpg?

By effectively reducing displacement.
Exhaust gas that takes the place of fresh air in the combustion chamber effectively reduces displacement.
Less fresh airflow into the engine=less fuel required to meet the target air/fuel ratio.

Arent they generally open only in a "no-load" condition?
Low-load (cruising, etc) is when EGR is used. This because you have less available power due to the extra exhaust gas in the combustion chamber. When cruising, your truck needs very little power to maintain speed-the rest is
pumping loss in unnecessary displacement. When you tip into the throttle(and need more displacement/power),the PCM sees the load change, and decreases or shuts off all EGR flow to allow full power.
