got my locking cap from flebay soon as i got the X ,as theres over $400 worth of gas inside when its full up.
so the $15 i paid for it gives me a little piece of mind when i leave it on the driveway overnight.
there is a large number of people in the UK that are having their tanks drained overnight because of the price of fuel here.
but as stated in a few posts above, all they do now is wack a hole underneath & let the fuel drain out
We put locking gas caps on all our cars about 2 months ago... my Corolla doesn't like it at all & I'm back to the factory cap, but the Honda's & X don't have a problem with them.
We put the locking caps on on after several cars on the street around the corner from us got siphoned. About a month later, one of the guys at work said he put a locking cap on his truck & as someone else mentioned, they just punctured the tank.
I'm having second thoughts about putting the locking cap on. I'd expect that it's be about $500 to replace the tank on the X. Its probably worth the loss of a tank of gas....
I honestly like the idea of an alarm with a pinswitch on the fuel door best. They wont know theres a locking cap unless they open the door, and then the siren goes off, and off they go. Hook it up to my truck air horn, and they may just mess themselves lol.
I've said this elsewhere. If you don't lock your fuel tank you are 100% open to fuel thieves, and you will be totally lost because you have no proof anyone stole anything.
If you put on a locking fuel cap it will stop a good portion of fuel thieves who don't ant to mess with getting the cap off or puncuting the tank. For the times when the thieves go ahead and break off your cap, or puncture the tank you now have proof that this was done, and you can try to make an insurance claim. Then I guess it will be different for everyone on how their insurance company would handle this.
Locking fuel caps also help to avoid the eco-terrorist tree huggers that decide to try to put something in your tank to damage your vehicle (water, sugar, etc.).
ford offers a locking cap now, has a cool chrome lid with the ford logo covering the lock cylinder that you flip out of the way to put the key in. my buddy is a ford parts manager so i got it pretty cheap, don't know what msrp is though.
