leads on high amp alternators and wiring harness?

Ah, the never ending epic of electrical mayhem. My alternator has now taken a dump, but I would like to replace it with a higher amp one (80-100amp?), to support my audio amplifier and off road lights. So far I'm only finding 65amp alts for my application. Any good leads? Also I'd like the wiring harness that runs from the alternator/solenoid/voltgage regulator. I've recently had to do some work on this and don't have good piece of mind since I was working with a badly mangled mass of wiring to begin with. This harness may be at least part of the reason the battery is not getting charged from the alternator, but I figure I'll just replace them both in a fit of overkill. I didn't find this stuff at the store here, so any leads would be appreciated. Its for the below truck. Thanks guys.

You can get a new voltage regulator plug at parts stores for a couple of bucks. Do a search for alternators. You can buy a kit to upgrade yours to 100 amps for $35.

If your on a wrecking yard patrol, look for E-150's with all the bells & whistles.
I just got a 130Amp alt out of the van, took in and got it all chromed.

Sorry, I don't have another.

Thanks for the thoughts. I hadn't thought about the kits as I've never used them before. I'll browse around on the web I suppose. It seems like I can never find what I need in the yards out here but I'll keep the those vans in mind. Any thoughts on that wiring harness...I can't get squat from the dealer out here because my trucks "too old", i.e. they don't want to go through the microfiche.

You can buy a new plug for the voltage regulator for about $3. It has pigtails on it. With it and a few feet of wire you can build a new alternator to regulator wiring harness.

I'm hitting the yards today, but if I can't find a decent harness I may just have to do that, Mike. I've gone through all twenty pages of the electrical forum and searched the web and am pretty confident that a new plug and play harness is not to be had. Hopefully I can find a used one in good condition. I could make my own but I'd rather not have any splices if I can help it. Enjoy your Saturday guys...I usually enjoy browsing through yards but its pouring rain and cold out here so I think bringing a flask is gonna be the only thing "salvaging" this situation...

The best thing is to look at Mercury cars for your hi-amp alternator. Example from Autozone:
Duralast - DL73031
Valucraft - 73031

If that fails, later model E-350 vans
1979 Ford E-350 460:
Beck/Arnlet - 186-6361

If you need a socket/connector for the alternator try Autozone (not always available) or NAPA ($12-$18).

If I were you, I would go for a one wire alternator (Delco/Remy)
and hook it up with 4 or 6 gauge cables.

I have not had personal experience with Wrangler (www.wranglernew.com)power products except for small stuff. But, they carry nice looking alternators, harnesses, and connectors.

Now that search is back up, I was able to find your topic after I found my tech stuff. This comes from the technical sales manual (dated 1990) used by the sales department at dealerships. It should be fairly accurate.

100 amp Motorcraft
Found in 1990 Econoline

4.9L 2.65:1 drive ratio

5.0, 5.8, 7.5, Best performance curve going by the charts, 90 amps comes in at < 1100 rpms with the 2.80-2.85:1 drive ratio.

7.3l (diesel) 2.18:1

The Explorer 95 amp is unsuitable for your FE because the peak (90) does not come into play until 2000 rpms going by the charts with a 2.30:1 pulley. It might be suitable if it had the 2.80:1 pulley from the Econoline.

165 amp Leece-Neville
F-series/Econoline 7.3L diesel 2.47:1 ratio
Over 100 amps at about 750 rpms. This would give you about the same as the 100 amp at 1200 less rpms (if my figures are correct).

output (amp): 95 100 165
output (watt): 1425 1500 2310

I think I would hit the junkyard for the van alternator to make sure it fit and to grab the voltage regulator, harness, and plugs. Then use the core at Autozone. The most popular engines referenced by Autozone are the 460/351, each at about 35% for the V-8s in E-350s for that year. External voltage regu;ator.

Duralast DL73031-6-3 LLT $100 plus core.
