1956 F-100 Unusual Color Code
MY LONGBED 1956 FORD F-100 HAS AN UNUSUAL CODE FOR THE OUTSIDE COLOR. RIGHT ABOVE THE WORD COLOR, ON THE IDENTIFICATION PLATE,IS STAMPED " B RED". I KNOW THE "B" STANDS FOR NOCTURN BLUE, BUT WHAT DOES THE "RED" STAND FOR ? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
THIS TRUCK IS NOW A SHORT BED, AND FOR SALE EARLY NEXT YEAR. MY JOB IS NOT SUPPORTING MY HOBBY.
THANKS, TERRY, FREEDOM FORD, FRESNO, CALIFORNIA

OK, just a couple questions. What color can you find on the truck to verify the original color?
B stands for Dark Blue Metallic quoted from the ford pickup red book.
My thought is this, lets find the original color of the truck and go from there. If it is in fact blue I'm at a loss for words as I have no answer. "IF" it is RED I'd bet the "B" is an"R" or supposed to be an R.
----OR----
If it was originally RED then I'd say the "B" is supposed to be an "E" for colonial white two tone option.
----OR----
Someone needed a vin tag and that one doesnt even go to that truck originally.
52 years later its anyones guess, maybe the guy who did the vin tag stamping called in sick on monday march 12, 1956, and the guy who filled in used to work on the courier line and he remembered that the courier used a 2 letter designation for interrior BR, R = RED.
good luck,
Kevin Bigwin

See I told you bigwin would answer. Now let's see if number dummy can answer better. The real question is---what is original color to your truck? Sometimes you take the speedo out-you will find original color. If you take out front or rear window-you may find original color. I have found out to always look at this stuff to see if the paint is original.

Color coding weirdness.
Got my curiosity up and so I went to look at mine. It says "G TAN" on my data plate. 'G' is Meadow Mist Green. Tan interior?
If so, then the Nocturn Blue truck had red interior.
Also for production date, were they made during the model year or the year before? Mine is K for October under first year according to the chart at:
www.johnsf100.com/idplates/5356/5356idplate.htm
F10V6R **** 14K412 - Would that mean it was made in 55 or 56?
Also original trans is specified as '3 STD'.

New vehicle production usually begins in August of the previous year, because September is new vehicle introduction month.
That's usually the case, but Ford had assembly line problems with the 1957 F Series trucks, which weren't introduced till January 1957.
Because of this, the 1956's were made all the way thru October of 1956...some were even titled as 1957's!
I have no klew about the B paint code refering to red. The passenger car parts catalog doesn't list any B red codes either.
I do know that one of Ford's major fleet buyers specified a special color of red for all its vehicles. Coca-Cola red to be exact.
Bill Walford: Why yank the speedo out to see what color the vehicle was? It's a heck of a lot easier to just look under the seat.

N.d.--over the yrs of painting vehicles and especially trucks--most people will mask the speedo and if the seat was out or the po painted the floor with spray bombs, etc because it is so easy to do.
I just thought it is just a painters traight to look under items not generally removed to see original color. Most trucks 50 plus yrs old in the ''rust'' belt most likely do not even have metal in the floor anymore-haha---N.D.--this aint socal!!!! HAHA!!! Bill
