Engine to Transmission Question...

Will an NP435 Transmission out of a 1973 F-100 mate to a 1992 351W? The Windsor has a 5-speed transmission and is in an F-250. Is the pilot bushing diameter the same? And will the length of the input shaft work? Thanks to anyone who might be able to quickly answer this question, as I am considering buying the 351 w/wiring harness and computer...I'm afraid I might miss the sale, but I need info so that I don't buy the wrong parts...

what engine did the 73 have. the np 435 i believe has an 11 mm input shaft so you may have to get a diff bearing to fit depending on what trans the 351 had on it. i know i did this on a 352 and it took an alternator bearing, 4 dollars.

Don't know which engine the '73 had. I got the transmission and bellhousing from a transmission guy...the 351 has a 1983 5-speed manual...

IF you have a bell that will fit the 351, a truck bell, you are good.

Of course, the clutch plate, pilot bushing must fit, but you can make that work.

IMO the best bet here is to get the 5 speed too.

Yes I have the bellhousing that came with the NP435. Like you say, the clutch plate and even the pilot bushing weren't as much a concern as the length of the input shaft which(w/o running out to the garage to measure)I believe is 6 1/2". I may just pick up that 5-speed for future use if I make this purchase, but this Ford drivetrain would be going into a 1978 Jeep CJ-5 and I want the granny gear. Is the 5-speed from the 1983 F-250(ZF, right?)a 4-speed w/a granny low? Anyone know the ratios? Thanks.

As far as I remember the ZF 5speed didnt show up in ford trucks until ~87. The M5OD about the same time as well. But the ratios should be available for the ZF but it wont have as low of a first gear as the NP435 or T-18.

Follow-up question...

Sorry, if this question doesn't belong here, but can you swap a flexplate for a flywheel and use an engine that was mated to an automatic transmission if you want to use a manual transmission? In my quest for a Ford small block to bolt to my NP435, I've come across a 1985 302 w/a flexplate and torque converter...

Yes you can, just make sure the flywheel is correct for the engine. All ford engines have their crankshaft drilled for the pilot. (unlike Dodge) 302's have 2 different weight imbalances so there are 2 different flywheels. 28oz (older)
50oz (newer) Also have to make sure the pilot bushing fits the trans.
