Should have read the posts first-Fuel Tanks

I have a 2002 SDCCLB V10 that I use mostly for towing my 5th wheel.
I have installed Banks Power Pack and 4:88 gears. My mileage is about 7 when towing and 11 unloaded. Our trips are not too long but we do go to out of the way places so with the price of fuel out of hand, (Calif.) and thru the roof in resort areas I bought a 40 gallon transfer tank. I thought I would fill it here in So. Cal. and use the fuel as needed in the more remote areas. I have it strapped in the bed, it fits nice, (19" tall & black so it doesent attract attention). I plan on siphoning from the fill to the truck tank. But after reading some posts I have some concerns; Grounding and DOT.
The tank is intended for diesel but I figured if I just stored gas in it and did'nt have it plumbed into the system I'd be OK. Should I remove it and bite the bullet ($6.00 - $7.00 fuel) in the national parks or am I OK.

There are issues with transporting that much gasoline. At some point you have to have placards and abide by DOT regulations. I don't know how much you need to qualify.

Those tanks are not designed for gasoline, they may not handle long term storage.

I have been running a 50 gal aux tank for 10 years I pump it out of the aux tank into the main tank. Its' all tied into the tucks fuel venting system and I have used and filled it in Cal. If you are worried about grounding its easy to run a ground strap to the truck box.

The key things that make them not approved for gas use in Ca are grounding, possible leakage, and vents. Due to the vent, you will not pass smog with the tank in your truck.

Its not that hard to tie into the tucks system to vent the tank.

The vent system (evaporative system) on vehicles is only certified for a limited amount of gasoline. If tankage is more than the certification the vehicle is not legal for smog check and should fail if the inspector is aware of the modification.

The other problem is that no matter what you do, if it is not a Carb approved system, they will fail you for it. It could be better than factory, inspectors don't care. No carb sticker and number = no passing the inspection.

I'm not sure what they inspect on a smog test but I think that all they do is check for codes and if you seal your system right there will be no codes. The only time in 8 years with this truck and 50 gal aux tank that I have ever had a code is when the seal around my fuel gauge was leaking.

I'm sure glad I have the tank because we are in Alaska and we filled up in Anchorage and traveled to Homer and Seward and back to Anchorage without filling. Gas Anchorage 4.43 gas Seward 5.00.

Transfer Flow sells DOT approved tanks for both gas and diesel.
