package price vs. price for part, the FX4 is actually cheaper than buying an base XLT and spec'ing it out to match a FX4. the FX4 package gives you a better discount...that's how it ends up being cheaper

the FX4 becomes alot more expensive once you start getting all the extra little goodies. mine for example had a sticker for $44k...but it's really a Lariat with a FX4 sticker in terms of options

either way, if the OP is buying a used truck, a FX4 and Lariat are better comparisons. Most XLT's are 4.6 motor with cloth and power windows. very rarely do you find one with a skid plate and the better rims. But yeah, a XLT will be cheaper...but you get what you pay for

5.4, especially if you are getting a 4x4.

Don't know if it's just where you're located, but most F150's, other than XL models here in CO are 5.4L and usually have a nice set of rims. Sure they usually have cloth and pwr windows and rarely do you find one with skid plates. Personally, I'd opt for aftermarket skid plates over the stock anyday on the 04+ F150's. The '03 & prior F150's had much better skid plates in my opinion.

My XLT SuperCrew came stock with 5.4 3v, 3.73 gears, & Tow package, all I added was factory skid plates, & BFG's All Terrains 285x70x17's for my Off Road Hunting Trips in ME!................I essentially have an FX-4 with better tires much cheaper!............
