A dumb question.
With the horsepower numbers that the competition is putting up, why doesn't ford just make the V10 an option for the F150? It seems like that would be a much easier option than trying to develop a new engine or trying to squeeze as much power as possible out of the 5.4. Like I said, just a dumb question.

A couple of reasons I can think of
1. It won't fit in an f150
2. even the v10 is down on HP compared to other manufacturers v8 engines
3. With todays fuel prices ford would sell something like 6 of them.
Ford's triton will never compare to the other manufacturers engines without either being supercharged or completely scrapped for something more modern. Hell even GM's LS series of pushrod engines is more modern than the triton, which is essentially a piece of 1980's technology

Yup, the V10 only has 362HP and 457 ft-lbs of torque @ 6.8L.
GM has the 6.2 V8 pushing 413HP, Dodge has the 5.7 HEMI pushing 390 HP & 407 ft-lbs, and the Toyota has the 5.7 (iForce?) V8 pushing 381HP and 401 ft-lbs

Number ONE REASON is FORD like all other manufactures are moving to more fuel efficient small cars. TRUCKS & SUVs are on the back burner. All the news about gas prices has told of the trouble Ford, GM, & Chrysler are facing. When you can't give away trucks & SUVs you aren't going to work harder to produce them. Ford has announced that they now are hoping to just break even NEXT YEAR 2009. That is being viewed as MAYBE. Ford is laying off another 6000 workers I believe I read on Yahoo & closing truck & SUV plants to retool for fuel efficient cars. This was front page YAHOO yesterday.

They are going to convert the Explorer Sport-Trac plant here in town over to a small car plant.
The SuperDuty plant here is down for the whole month of July and every other week in August!!.
The new BOSS engine would probably be the way to go if they can get the mileage up to where it should be. Big bores with a shorter stroke will be a better deal.
