14 vs 15 quarts of oil for a 6.0

Thanks to all the great contributors on here.

As a result of reading one post, I just did my oil change with 14 quarts instead of my usual 15. My observation right now is that the dipstick does not look any different than it normally does after I change the oil, it is up to the max line. I can only guess that it was way overfilled in the past, beyond that line, I just couldn't see it properly. If anyone has any thoughts on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am happy to save even 1 quart at these prices...

13.5 for me also - right in the middle.
The HPOP holds about a quart and a half that does not drain out.

I have the oilguard bypass and just fill it up with 16 quarts.

To tell you the truth, I only pulled my dipstick once or twice since I owned my truck, and now have 39,000 miles on it. My driveway is on a slant and I never think about it after I leave my house.

I also start at 13.5 quarts when refilling the oil. But after running it, I usually end up putting that extra .5 quarts to get it to the top of the hash marks.

When the truck was new, I would fill it with 15 quarts and I developed a leak in what ended up being the bedplate that I later had the dealership fix. I found out about the 14 quart refill on this site and I'm grateful for that and only wish I would've found out earlier.

be careful when doing that cause you need to wait at least 20 minutes to check your oil after running the engine to give the oil time to drain. otherwise you will fill it up to max and then when the oil drains back into the pan you are overfilled. if you do check it right after running it it needs to be at min. or just above to put you in the sweet spot.

Thanks for the replies and insights. Mine looks good after considerable driving, like I said, if I can save 1 quart per change, I will take it.

I use 16.5 quarts of Amsoil since I put on the FS-2500 by-pass system on it, ran it like this for 65,000 miles.

Did you ever get a viscosity analysis? After 5k miles you weren't running 40 weight any more. From all the research I have done on oil (including Amsoil), at 10k you are on the very low side of 30 weight.

I mean that I ran this setup with this much oil for 65,000 miles, I change the oil every 8k miles, and my reports came back normal even at 8k miles, and it shows that the oil is almost like new. Sorry for the confusion.

I use 13.5 qts, it puts it at the 3/4 mark & it doesn't use any oil in 4,000 miles when I change it. Never did put 15 qts in it even on it's very first oil change ever.

the reason you only need 13.5 to 14 quarts on re-fill @ oil change
is because the HPOP reservoir holds .95 quarts and isnt drained when
you drain the pan.

if youre putting in 15 quarts on the refill your putting in too much....
you likely will feel engine surging from the crank swinging thru the extra
oil

These images (below) are to help provide PROOF & INSIGHT about the HPOP...
