what is the best and safest tuner for a 6.0 . I just bought a 2004 crew cab 4x4 and i don,t want to kill it and i would like to get better mileage only getting 12.5 empty. Any hep would be app. thanks woody.
SCT X3 is the best thing that happened for my truck! I was strictly after power though. Hypertech Max Energy is the best in my opinion because: 30 day money back guarantee, costs only about $380, easy install, 3-4 mpg gain from tuner alone, smooth shifting, minimal smoke, no loss of factory warranty, and you can keep 'er floored on the highest setting (115ish hp/ 200ish tq) with max load up any hill & they guarantee it will not burn up the engine. I've tested it, and love it. it's about as idiot proof as they come.
I'm really not too familiar with them. I don't know if ebay is the way to go. How much will you really save in the end to get $50 off. If you have problems with them a lot of shops will you to **** up a rope if you didn't buy it from them, but on the other hand, stand by it to the end if you buy from them. Good luck.
thanks for the info i found a predator chip on ebay are they any good /
I actually had a predator that I purchased from eBay, I liked the power but was a little uneasy about it. The Diablosport customer service was very responsive..unlike Hypertech who I've found to be very unresponsive. And their tunes triggered a CEL in my truck.
Mike: was it the max energy tuner that kicked on the CEL? I've had nothing bug good luck with this series. I never seriously considered Hypertech until I saw this one because I think all other products they have lack cosmetic appeal. They seemed pretty cheesy in fact. for a guy just looking for power he doesn't have to worry about, I'd say that's the way to go. I've tried a bunch of different brands, but predator is not one I've tried yet. why would you recommend it other than their responsive customer service? BTW even though I run the SCT X3 currently, I'd never put in another SCT livewire because I hate the way it operates. any thoughts on that?

It was the "Max Energy E-Con" which is the same according to Hypertech except it only has the first 2 levels and less features. I also felt it was very chessy in it's build quality. The predator really got my truck up and going, but I wasn't looking for mileage then and I didn't have gauges in so I went with something that had a easier reputation on the 6.0. I've never tried the livewire but was looking at it, thanks for the tip on that one!
My buddy has a tuner and said he gained significant horses and several miles per gallon and would do mine as well.
My Q is if this affect my warranty/extended warrant in any way. I paid for it and don't want to throw it out the window on a tune.
It can effect you warranty, however to what extent depends on your dealer. I have all the Banks goodies on my truck as listed in my siggy. I had the six gun with power PDA too. Took mine into the dealer and had warraty work done to it with no problems. I have since gotten rid of the Six Gun and in the process of researching a new tuner with custom tunes. I wish Spartan would get back to me so I can get a tuner here but no dice.
Was at the dealer today and Ford is in a new phase of mod/warranty crack downs. If you value the engine warranty be very careful.
i think you posted this same line a couple of times today...what's this "crackdown"? are they going door to door looking for intakes and chips?
Mods and warranty:
It really depends on the situation which has many variables...the dealership service dept is number one...it seems the dealerships who frown on mods the most are the ones who've abused Fords pretty generous warranty policy in the past...the dealership is the one who makes the determination whether or not to repair the vehicle under warranty...they must consider the fact that Ford may question the legitimacy of the warranty claim and not pay it...if they've been straight shooters in the past, whether the vehicle was modified or not, they shouldn't have much trouble...some service departments are very conservative and just don't want to be in a questionable situation..
second thing is the extent of the repair..if you've got a truck with a 3rd burnt up tranny or a rod through the block, it will be scrutinized...other things common to the 6.0 are often repaired without question...if the vehicle has been clearly abused, what do you expect...
third is customer attitude...if you go in bad mouthing their product, don't expect much...talk to your service dept personell like professionals, as they are..it takes a skilled, intelligent technician to accurately diagnose and repair some of the 6.0's complex problems..but then again, that's why you took it there or you'd fix it yourself, right?
Ford has a thin line to walk...they don't want to alienate customers by turning them down for enjoying their vehicles..who would buy their next vehicle from "the bad guy"?...they want to be top dog among consumers and enthusiasts as that will help to generate higher sales numbers..whether towing a trailer or driving down the street, there is a market for people that don't like getting passed by the other guy...the other side of the line is that they must remain profitable in the long run...that hasn't been the case as of late, and shows their commitment to the customer..of course Ford won't fix everything under any circumstance under warranty..
this is all from my personal experience in dealing and watching others deal with the warranty question...i've seen Ford be very resonable in the handling of claims....we, as customers, should do the same..you probably did some research before buying your vehicle...spend some time doing research if you intend to alter it's systems...not all products are the same...
to woody67: don't get a predator....their track record is not so good as far as the long term reliability of your engine..if you're just looking for mileage, the cost for a chip and supporting mods may take a long time to equal out...mileage gains can be had and it's usually the most radical tunes which will show the most benefit...if you can alter your driving style and habits, you'll save some $$ on fuel and not have to be worried about warranty..otherwise, be prepared to spend about $1200-$1500 on a decent set-up and accept the fact that future repairs may be on your dime..
