What Engines Were Available In A 1978 Ranchero?

I may go to look at a 1978 Ranchero, that's for sale. The owner isn't sure about the motor. What motors were available in a 1978 Ranchero?

Am I correct to assume that if it's a 429, then it is not the original motor?

"The brouchure sir, Ford does not offer the 429, in fact I've never heard of one, I think that was a Chevrolet engine in one of their sporty cars--they didn't sell very well, it didn't have power like this 400 in the Squire here">*

Auto Brochure

1978 Ford Ranchero

*possible quote from a Ford Salesman in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 as he tried to unload a Ranchero Squire with the 400....

429 ended in 1973 in cars (iirc) but lived on in trucks. (diff version)

So if it's really a 429, it isn't original. If you don't know the diff, search for engine ID here...

I am quite familiar with the Ford 335 Series motors, and also the Windsor motors. I will certainly be able to tell if it's a 302, 351M or 400 motor. It is difficult to tell a 351M apart from a 400, but I'll know immediatly if it's not one of those.

Good.

Even though I really hate this particular series of the Ranchero, I wish you good luck with it.

Happy Motoring!
