What Size Gas Tank Do I have?
Ok so I found out yesterday that my gas guage isn't "exactly" correct while on my way home from a cook out! 1/4 tank on the guage and out a gas on the highway! (the wife was not happy). The tow truck guy put two gallons in and when I filled it up it took 12 gallons. So I am thinking it is a 15 gallon tank.
Does this sound correct for this truck? It seems to me that it would be a bigger tank. It has the tank behind the seat.
Also what do I need to do to get this thing to indicate the correct amount, guage, or sending unit in the tank?
Any ideas?
Thanks
Gene
ps do you think flowers will make her quit snarling at me?

As for the flowers, it can not hurt so I vote yes on that.
I remember when I was in high school I thought the fuel tank was around 18 gallons but I had the fuel pump on "auto pilot" as it was cold and did not want to stand there and hold it, well any way the pump was showing 21 gallons and then clicked off. I was puzzled but it was the first time i ever completely filled the tank, well the hose between the cab and tank was shot and the other 2 gallons was on the cab floor. It wasn't very nice to drive the pickup home with the windows down in the middle of winter.

Flowers ALWAYS help, I second the motion. It was funny when my wife finally drove my 66, she said "well this drives nice, I might drive it more often,,," dang-it! shouldn't of had them margarita's!
But without A/C, she sticks to her Ex, or the Lexus, course she did drive my 77 this weekend, and she said the same thing, but then again, it dosen't have A/C either, so that is when I told her I need to buy this 73 SCS that is an auto AND has A/C,,,,
we shall see!

D = decade = 1970's / 0 = 1970 / T = truck / Z = Ford part.
1961/66 = the D0TZ-9002-A gas tank was not what was in there originally.
In 1970, Ford replaced the tank used from 1961 thru 1966 (C1TZ-9002-J not F *) with the 1970 tank (D0TZ-9002-A) for use as a service part replacement.
So...unless the tank has been changed, 17 gallons is the correct capacity for 1961/66's.
D0TZ-9002-A also replaced the tanks used 1967/69.
* Take another look in your parts catalog: C1TZ-9002-F fits 1961/64 F100/250's with a body style of 84 or 85, not body style 81.
Body style 84: Open drive-away (no cab, no windshield) / Body Style 85: Open drive-away (no cab, with a windshield). It's kinda hard to have an in-cab gas tank when there's no cab.
Now look under the listing of D0TZ, (down to the 5th line) it shows 1964 F100/750 body style 66 or 81. 66 is incorrect, there were no Uni's made after 1963.

btw: The fuel sender for the in-cab tank has ALSO been replaced:
D7TZ-9275-G .. Fuel Tank Sending Unit / Fits: 1961/77 F100/750's with in cab tanks.
It's still available from Ford
MSRP: $87.98 / ftepartsguy.com price: $63.35
---------------------------------------------
WHOA fellow members, don't buy that sending unit just yet.
Da Big Dummy sez: The gas tank float is made of two pieces of copper soldered together, solder breaks down, gas seeps into float, float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.
C0AZ-9202-B .. Fuel Sender Float / MSRP: $6.99 / ftepartsguy.com price: $5.04
C1TF-9276-A .. Fuel Sender Gasket / MSRP: $4.67 / ftepartsguy's price: $3.64
The float and gasket come with the sender, but why buy the whole tamale, when the float is the usual problem?

More on the fill pipes of the LTD's of the 1965/72 period, which will contain at least a 1/2 to 3/4's of a gallon extra.
There's no Ford pickup made from 1948 on up...that has less than a 17 gallon fuel tank capacity.
How hot a day izit? Hot temperatures 90 degrees and up cause gasoline to expand. Never top off the tank on a hot day.

No parts catalog mis-print...think of what the prefix of D0TZ refers to:

Ford confusion on updated part numbers. When a part number is updated or replaced, Ford carried it in the price book for one year. After one year, the number was dropped from the price book.
Parts catalogs are updated 2-4 times a year, so after one year, the old number was replaced with the new one when the next book change took place.
Now you know why is sez 1970 (D0TZ) for that 1964 and later gas tank.
btw: When I said the catalog was updated, that doesn't mean Ford sent out a complete new version...all they did was send out new pages, 100's of them...so changing books was a PITA.
The books used by most of us were printed on loose-leaf 3 ring type paper, that was inserted into special binders...right thru 1996.
The 1964/72 version (your CD was scanned from the last [1975] printing) took up two binders, and was ungainly because it weighed a ton, and when stacked up, measured almost three feet high.
Microfiche slides were frowned upon...hard to read, gotta adjust the *&(& lens every time you move the slide around.....I still hate it, even tho everything I have after 1972 is on it.
I also have the OSI catalogs on paper and on fiche. A MUST HAVE...because without them, I'd be SOL, typing p/n's on FTE.
OSI means: Obsolete-Supercede-Interchange...these are the catalogs that show updated (or what went obsolete and when) part numbers.

Ok. Great information here. I just want to be sure I reiterate that I ran out of gas, the tow truck guy put in 2 gallons, I immediatly (2miles or less ) filled the tank until the nozle clicked at least 3 times and the pump showed 12 gallons 12 + 2 = 14, that tells me that if all is accurate I had ~3 gallons in the tank when it ran out. The tank looks original, the guage showed ~ 1/4 tank. 1/4 of 17 = 4.25 gallons. let's say the guage is off a little and it had 3 gallons= why did I run out? Let's say the guage is way off and the tank was empty. Why the 14 gals? I am wondering if I in fact I do have a fuel pick up problem. This is how I rationalize my stupidity of running out of gas.
Thank folks

^^^ My gas gauge may be in-accurate, why is that? ^^^
Remove the sending unit, shake the float...do you hear any gas sloshing around?
If the answer is yes, it's time for a new float.
