I'm working on a '50 F100 and I need some info on the motor. I don't have any good web sites for flatheads. The motor has 59A-B cast on the heads. Anybody know what this is?? I need to overhaul the carbs, one is a Ford Model 59, the other is a Chandler Groves(!?!?). I can't find any sourse for kits for these. They sit on a high-rise (about 10" !!) manifold that has a name cast into the side that looks like THICKSLUG, but I'm sure that isn't right. The name is about the size of a dollar, and in this case, is VERY worn out.

I don't think that this is the original motor, and any help I can find to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

 

You can go to www.classicar.com and there is 2 very good chat and forum areas to get info on flatheads. it sounds like you have a earlier engine, say early 40's. It has the crab style distributor? The truck should have the 8RT series engine with the side mount distributor. You are right, it does have the crab type dist. on the front of the motor. According to Flathead Jack, it is a 48 Mercury motor. As I get into this I will send you an e-mail to ask questions. Thanks again

The merc crank is the prefered for hot rodding the flathead. Take it and put it into a Ford block, do the appropaite rod change adjustment and you have a "stroked" ford. The merc crank is of better quality "forged" I believe; the Ford is "cast" If your going to rebuild it think about that. I also have a Merc eng (later year) and I wish I had spent the rebuild doing that.
