Seth, sorry we missed your question. There were two 239 engines produced by Ford. Since you're in the flathead section, the 239 flathead produced from 1939 in the Mercury's until 1954 in Canada. The early ones (39-47 trucks) had the bellhousing cast on the rear of the block. Later ones (48 - 53, 54 Canada) had a separate bell housing that bolted to the block.

Then Ford produced a 239 OHV "Y" block engine in 1954 trucks. I'm not familiar with these, so you should probably ask over on the Y-block forum if that's what you're looking for.

In general the flathead bellhousing won't fit anything else, but several suppliers make adapters for fitting later standard and automatic trannies to flatheads.
