If something works, no problems in over 400 thousand miles, why change and go with an unknown?
I'm with Dave we all know berus work. And no offens but you're one guy saying ACs are good if you get the right ones. I have no readon not to belive you but we also have no reason to swich brands. If it aint broke dont fix it.
i speak from experience on different glow plug brands.
when doing maintainance on a fleet of 250 ambulances, and having to pull the heads on over 150 of them due to off brand glow plugs, i will let a ford/international diesel sit before i put anything but the MOTORCRAFT/ BERU plugs in one.
some people are lucky with other plugs, and i say more power to you!!
as for me though, i go by what works for me, and don't use anything that gives me problems.
especially when the recomended plug is cheaper than the problem plugs.
A friend described a glow plug to me as being like a light bulb and the higher wattage it is the longer it will last. When I had my 6.2 he found me some high wattage plugs and they were still burning fine over 2 years later. When I replaced the plugs in the 6.9 after I got it I bought a set of Delphi plugs. I have been running them for a couple of years now and they failed just recently due to the controller going crazy. As far as the voltage goes I was always under the impression that glow plugs were ran on 6V but when I was talking to the injector shop the other day he told me that all glow plugs manufactured are 12V now. I really wouldn't have a problem with waiting longer for them to heat up if it meant they wouldn't burn up.
I intend to look into the AC dual coil plugs when I have some more time. If they can run constant like Marianna says, than I would probably switch to them if I ever have to replace my BERU plugs.
I wish I would have read this post before I bought the Wellmen from Pensacola but at least I haven't installed them yet. I will try and return them and go with the MC/Beru plugs
I have never changed glow plugs in my 03 7.3, it starts when it is suppose to so have no plans on fixing something that isn't broke but will remember about the motorcraft advice.
Mine is a 1994 I have no idea if they have ever been changed only had the truck 1 year it has 130k on it and I'm doing injection pump and injectors just made since to me to replace the glow plugs while all those parts are off
after work I did some major cleaning under the hood to steralize the area and keep dirt away from where it shouldn't be and went after the hardest Glow plug (under the Turbo) it turned out to be not to bad to remove, the plug is stamped made in Germany. So should I use anti seize when putting in the new ones?
Thanks for the PM Phy I have all new german made motorcraft GPs the same as I pulled out which I noticed the wear on the old GPs caused the tips to taper smaller to the end and not swell as was described as the problem with the other brands, the came out pretty easy a little anti seize on the news ones and the went right in. Now I'm soaking the injectors with PB they are not coming out as easy
