292 generator swap

I would like to know what is involved in swapping the generator to an alternator on my 292. Are there any prefab brackets available?

Thanks
Greg

I DID MINE!!What I did was purchase a Delco remy alternater, the kind without the upper plug, that has only one wire you bolt on the back. That one wire simply goes to the positive terminal on your battery. Here's how we did mine on my 292 in my 63 ford unibody pickup. We left the existing generator bracket on.Then bolted the alternater to the outer top hole of the generator bracket. Then left the existing ear, that protruded from the bottom and added a top alternator ear bracket from a 200 6 cylinder from a 66 mustang and bolted the bottom two together, and it even allows 3 inches slide on the bottom,Im using a 45 inch belt on mine.ITS BEAUTIFUL!!!fast starts, and I've been running it for 3 years now and drive my pickup at least 20 miles per day. Those simple type alternators with the one wire that goes from the back bolt directly to the battery, can be found at starter and alternator shops.I payed only 52 dollars for mine.Everything else is original, but our rig job here,is sound and works damn good!!!No voltage regulator to worry about,no wiring issues,it's just beautiful!!!!Delco remy alternators are mainly used on GM products and unlike most ford alternators, these delco remy types have the voltage regulator built in,you can't beat it!!!....Janet

I have an idea honey,if you want me to i will take a picture of the setup from under my hood and email it to you.I hate generators,I almost lost My 1960 cadillac that i invested over 4000 dollars in the engine over those damn things.I put on a new rebuilt generator I ordered from auto zone and well,im the dum dum here, but i forgot to polarize the regulator, field to battery with a jumper wire, and parked that generator started to smoke and i noticed just in time before it caused any damage luckily....Janet

One more thing, sure, you won't have a gauge using this method, but dear. From my family owning a garage since i was a small kid,Delco remy alternators usually never give problems.Once a month or so,i double check mine and just pull the battery ground cable off while it's running and if it's still running then you know it works.I've been driving it for 3 years, and not any problem at all.

Janet how many amps alternator should I get, I'm thinking of switching out my generator for the one (1) wire setup... I was told that 60 amps would be good on 61 292v8,,,it runs a 12volt system.

I keep forgetting to ask, what happens to the wiring from regulator, I believe that there's two wires that come into the regulator from along the firewall, (thick yellow and thin yellow) what happens to these?

292 generator swap

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Dec-02 AT 02:17 AM (EST)]Hi, Janet. Could you email me a picture, too. I'm halfway through converting to 12 volts on my 54 F100 and I happen to have a Delco Remy alternator sitting around my garage.

My email address should be in my profile.

Edit: whoopsie. I guess you'll have to use the FTE mail facility to contact me. Thanks in advance.

Yes guys!!I'll take the pictures, and email you guys.I'll send them later this afternoon. On your voltage regulator,I just taped the ends off, because you no longer need those with a delco remy system. But left them dormant for originality purposes. On your old tell tale gauge of course that's gone now too.But you can always put a gauge on this system that shows how much the battery is being fed to the battery. As far as amps???These delco remy's i think put out about 63 amps, but that no longer matters.Reason why it doesn't matter is because you're not tieng in through your ignition wiring, those times it matters because of the gauge size wires in your ignition. You can be at a 63 amp or greater!!!Because it's a direct heavy gauge wire to battery!!Delco remys though are usually, about 63 amps and up.Get the simple one post alternator, auto zone will scratch their head.Because those are young dum dums.An alternator shop will or should have it right away.I bought mine from Woddys alternator and starter on aldine bender here in Houston Texas. The Pictures will be coming in your mail..Janet

Okay guys,I was unable to get a email address,..emaile me at

jat425 (No Email Addresses In Posts!)

And i will simply use your email to reply with the photos.I had to use a space in my email address between the jat426 and the @ because a page on this site says email address go to a page that wont allow us placing email addresses.

BTW,...60 amps is plenty dear!!Even if you had electric windows and AC,it would still be enough. Most Lincolns used 80 amp in mid 70,s but that's because they were thinking of chauffer services in traffic at a low idle,of 550 rpm while in gear, with AC running in the passenger compartment as well as stereo and things like this. Also, you can't use one too big,if its your delco type with built in regulator, because once it tops off a 12 volt battery,it will stop outputting.Mid 60's Chevrolet for example used the delco type in the form of a 63 amp or so on an air conditionied V8 283 or 307 or 327,so that tell you plenty right there.

BTW,i assembled My new rocker shafts and rockers last week, and installed on my 292,and adjusted them out.I had rebuilt My engine 3 years ago,but last week decided to go ahead and replace my rockers and the shaft,as they were a bit rough (within reason though),but why not have it right??

So excuse my slightly greasy engine as i took my time as i adjusted each tappet and made sure each got proper oil flow, and made sure my overflow tobe drained right in the left side rear,as well as my right engine side front hole made oil to the timing chain, which let oil roll down my engine to get it right!!!I sparyed it off after it cooled down, but haven't had a chance to actually clean it with soap and water. So excuse the greasy appearance....Janet

Greg,
There is a cast aluminum bracket available thru several of the F-100 and similar catalogs for the GM 1 wire. Not cheap.

The idea I like that doesnt take looking for long gone parts is this link:

http://www.ranchwagon.com/tech/alt/alt.htm

Id use the threaded rod and bushings just to set dimensions.
Then use a long Grade 8 bolt with spacers cut to fit. That would improve the looks, eliminate adjustments AND use something stronger than a hardware store threaded rod.

This is to "286merc"and other users. This is to confirm i feel the person is offensive and followed one of my best friends into another forum and accused them of being ME.I know my reply to them wasn't very nice. But they seem to think they own the internet.I was going to comment that i felt the links placed here by 286 merc were good additions!!And i did send that link to a few other Yblock owners and enthusiats. One of them,Earl who belongs to my Janet40 web ring, placed the link in another forum after i sent him that link yesterday.286 merc, you do not own these forums dear!

We are here (us yblock owners)to help one another. If we find a link and help others, you have no right in attacking that person and especially involving me in the way you have.I know that you are just a distributor of parts. And feel it's dishonest.I'm here to help others and share.Heres a responce I left you at the other forum where you mis accused my friend of stealing your link.

I certainly don't see you with real pictures helping others.Stay out of my way dear, and i intend doing the same.We have the right to disclose and share information with each other, without a salesman following us around the internet. Here's the message i left for you after you falsely indentified Myself with Earl,

"You owe me an apology merc.Or maybe you don't care about right and wrong and in your case doesn't matter.I noticed your little comments last week in here.I was going to comment to you on that link over there you placed. Are you also aware that i sent three of those users pictures of that conversion i described on my personal truck?I helped three people over there.I think Earl said it right.BTW,i have pictures of not only my truck but myself as well.

"You do not own the damn internet"

I sent that link to 6 other people as well.So what about it?I guess that meant i was supposed to say.Oh dear peoples of the US.Here's a link used in a topic i was in at another forum placed by a 286 merc and them bow and send a picture of my royal Butt.

Well excuse me!And kiss My damn BUTT,

Yours truly, the to morons JANET "

Ray, I dont intend to lower myself to their level. Bringing up something that happened elsewhere to pollute this group is despicable.

Suffice it to say they (altho I believe it is really just one person) are foul mouth, recent arrival trouble makers on another forum I have spent years on. Believe me, I wouldnt follow Earl/Janet anywhere.

Over there they/he are being boycotted and ignored by all in hopes they/he will go back to whatever place they/he came from. If you wish, I will EMail you the URL.

On this forum I hope the moderator will take action if they/he continue trying to spread hate and lies over here.

I have nothing more to say on the subject and will go to the moderator if it continues.
